Health Sciences Undergraduate Programs

Students majoring in Health Sciences can expect to complete a multi-disciplinary, science-based curriculum that will prepare them for a broad range of careers. Our students have gone on to graduate school and professional work in dentistry, dietetics and nutrition, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physician assistants, public health, among others.

Program Overview Advising

A Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences (HS) degree combines basic sciences, social sciences, and health science courses for students who desire a generalized health-focused academic experience. Discover your 4-year degree plan. Please see the Undergraduate Catalog for degree requirements.

Choose a concentration in one of three areas:

Holistic Health 

The Holistic Health concentration provides coursework that centers on lifestyle changes and self-care to promote wellness through diet, exercise, mental health, and spiritual awareness. The Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences with a Holistic Health concentration integrates principles of conventional and alternative practices to prepare students for opportunities in private and clinical holistic care centers.

Pre-health Professional Studies

A Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences degree with a concentration in Pre-health Professional Studies combines a broad spectrum of liberal arts, natural sciences, social sciences, and health sciences courses for students who desire a generalized academic experience. The concentration prepares students for careers in: 

  • community engagement
  • nonprofit organizations
  • holistic health
  • health or wellness education
  • graduate studies in public health, medicine and other professional programs
Pre-pharmacy

A Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences degree with a concentration in Pre-pharmacy prepares students to meet the academic prerequisites necessary to be considered for admission to Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) programs. Additional information can be found in the Undergraduate Catalog.


The Applied Health Sciences program is designed to allow students to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree by combining courses from the university curriculum with specific Associate of Applied Sciences (AAS) degrees from accredited community colleges. The two-plus-two degree completion program allows students to transfer up to 65 credits after completing an AAS degree in the following health-related fields:

  • dental assisting
  • health information technology
  • medical assistant
  • occupational therapy assistant
  • pharmacy technician
  • physical therapist assistant
  • respiratory therapy
  • surgical technology 
Students with AAS degrees in a health-related field not listed may seek permission to enroll.

Nutrition is an interdisciplinary field with three primary areas of focus: community nutrition (or public health), food service management, and clinical (medical) nutrition. The Bachelor of Science in Nutrition emphasizes the relationship between diet, nutrition, food access, and health status. 

This major is ideal for students interested in:

  • studying food and nutrition as it affects health
  • focusing on community engagement and clinical nutrition practice
  • the potential for professional practice in a wide variety of nutrition settings

Nutrition, B.S. Specialization in Dietetics

Dietetics Specialization prepares students to become an entry-level dietetic technician, registered (DTR) through specialized coursework and experiential learning activities. Additional information can be found in the Undergraduate Catalog


The Bachelor of Science in Nutrition has received approval of the State of Michigan to enroll students and is registered with the American Council of Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) to pursue accreditation status.
