Canto Tool Kit
Canto is the main resource for all authentic Oakland University photography and creative assets. Any professional photography, from events coverage to thoughtful marketing shots, are housed and accessible on Canto.
This tool kit provides details about all Canto’s capabilities and how any level of campus communicator can use Canto to organize and cross reference photos for effective marketing on every project. Tailored organization ensures assets will be available in any related folder, and customized sizing allows the download of any photo to any size specification, including social media, Emma banner, LiveWhale banner and more.
Faculty and Staff Canto Information
Canto is created with a single-sign-on format, meaning anyone with OU login credentials can login, view assets and download them. Visit Canto, and login with your Net ID and password by clicking “Login with SSO.”
Searching is available directly from the search bar and can include a variety of terms ranging from the photo project number to an AI feature search (ex: “student group outside”), names or any other terms that may be associated with your preferred assets.
Overal Organization Structure:
Canto is home to more than 300,000 assets so narrowing options before searching is also an option to make your review more efficient.
Top level organization appears on the right side of the platform as folders and albums. Some assets will appear in multiple folders/albums; for example, there could be photos from a SBA graduate student that appear in both the SBA and Grad School albums. Overall these categories include:
- Schools/College
- Types of event
- Headshots
- Campus beauty
- Buildings
- Brand
There are additional sorting tools available on the left side too; users can further sort assets by clicking on the “filter” icon on the top right side of the screen, such as keywords, tags, smart tags and people:
- Keywords have subcategories like student, alumni, scholarship, etc.
- Tags are descriptive information from the photo shoot, including the project number.
- Smart tags are AI tags that recognize features in photos like, “student with laptop.”
- People are also identified with AI recognition. (Once a person is identified once in Canto they will be tagged in most other photos of them.)
- Specific department
- And more!
Selection Group:
To collect a variety of images to review and download into one area, use the “My Selections" tool:
- Click on photos that you’d like to add to selections.
- Click the star icon on the top right.
- Any photos that you’ve chosen, even from different albums, will appear in the “My Selections” in the main left hand navigation.
These automatically clear out after some time, or you can clear them yourself when you’re done.
Collections:
If you’d like to create sharable collections, use the “Collections” tool:
- Select photos you’re interested in.
- Click the heart icon in the top right of the platform.
- A window will open that says, “Add to my collection,” and you can click an existing collection or create a new one.
- To create a new collection, type the name of your collection in the text box.
- Your collections will appear at the bottom of the main left-hand navigation, under “My Collections” with a heart icon.
Sharing a Collection:
You can share your collections with other members of OU’s community directly from Canto. To begin sharing one of your personalized collections:
- Click “My Collections” in the main left-hand navigation.
- You’ll be taken to a window with a list of your collections.
- Click the pencil icon on the right side.
- Under “Share With,” select or type who you’d like to share the collection with. (Make sure that the person you’re sharing with has logged into Canto before, or they will not appear in the list of options.)
After finding a photo or multiple, you can click the right corner of all photos and click the “download” icon in the top right area. This will download images in their original size.
To resize or customize a photo, click on the image until it’s on the full screen, then click the “download” icon on the left side, then a window will pop up with resizing preset options to choose from and lastly click “download” in the bottom right corner.
Photographers will now be directly connected to Canto, and new photos will be organized by UCM. Freelance photographers are given three business days for their editing process so new shoots will be available in Canto in five business days at the most.
If you would like to stay more connected to certain types of photography, saving a folder or album to receive notifications about new upload is an option too:
- Select a folder or album on the left side of the platform (ex: Campus, Events, Community)
- It will be highlighted in light gray if it’s selected.
- Click the gold, down pointing arrow on the bottom, left side of the page for “View detail information.”
- Click the small bookmark icon under the photo preview to “Add content to follow.”
- You’re now following that topic and will receive emails about additions!
You can review the albums/folders that you’re following through “Following” in the main left hand navigation; there’s a bookmark icon next to it too.
If there are questions about using Canto, please submit them to UCM’s question form.
If you need further assistance coordinating marketing efforts, review tool kit options, or submit a request through the UCM intake form for a larger need.
