Doctor of Philosophy in Human Movement Science

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in the Department of Human Movement Science is an academic doctorate to prepare leaders, educators and researchers. This degree is designed for physical therapists, exercise science and movement science professionals interested in obtaining the knowledge and skills to produce relevant research in human movement science. The program includes a dissertation research project under the guidance of a doctoral committee.

This program consists of a variety of courses in teaching and research, elective courses, and also offers graduate certificates that can be completed as a part of the degree. Detailed information can be found in the Graduate Catalog (see Curricular Requirements).

There are stipend programs and some scholarships available for students enrolled in the Ph.D. program. Specific information is given to students at the time of orientation. The Ph.D. program equips graduates with the skills and knowledge to become researchers, educators and practice leaders.

Job Outlook
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment of postsecondary teachers is projected to grow 12% from 2021 to 2031, much faster than the average for all occupations. Projected employment growth varies by academic field.

Average Salary
The BLS reports that the median annual wage for postsecondary teachers was $79,640 in 2021.
