Lara Alami

Applied Instructor, Voice

Lara Alami is a mezzo-soprano, soloist, composer, and professional ensemble singer based in Metro Detroit. She serves as an Applied Instructor in Voice in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance at Oakland University, where she teaches applied voice and works closely with undergraduate singers across classical and contemporary repertoire.

Lara maintains an active and versatile performing career as a soloist, ensemble artist, and operatic performer. Recent solo engagements include Handel’s Messiah and Joby Talbot’s Path of Miracles as a soloist with Audivi. Her operatic credits include the role of Vera Boronel in Menotti’s The Consul, and she has performed at the Oregon Bach Festival.

A frequent collaborator with professional vocal ensembles, Lara regularly appears with Conspirare, Choral Artists of Michigan, Audivi, and Alium Spiritum, a professional vocal quartet, with whom she has participated in summer tours. She has also performed with Sounding Light. Her work spans early music, choral-orchestral masterworks, and contemporary repertoire, and is distinguished by stylistic fluency, refined ensemble skills, and a deep commitment to musical integrity.

In addition to her performance career, Lara is an active composer. Her works have been premiered by Alium Spiritum, Audivi, and the Community Chorus of Detroit, reflecting her engagement with contemporary vocal writing and collaborative choral artistry.

Alongside her university teaching, Lara maintains a private studio, Alami Voice Studio, where she works with singers of all ages and levels. Her pedagogical approach emphasizes healthy, sustainable vocal technique, expressive communication, and evidence-informed vocal pedagogy, with particular interests in intonation, breath coordination, and long-term vocal health. She is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS).

Lara holds a master’s degree in vocal pedagogy. Her teaching is informed by her ongoing work as a performer and composer and by her dedication to thoughtful, student-centered mentorship, preparing singers for performances, auditions, and continued professional study.
