Course Equivalency Guide

Latest Update: July 28, 2022
Note: This list covers most mathematics and statistics courses from most Michigan institution This list covers most mathematiccs and statistics courses from most Michigan institutions that are equivalent to Oakland University courses numbered below 3000 (300) (and a few others as well, especially MTH 3002 (302), 4552 (452), and 4775 (475)). In most cases the name of the school is a hot link to their home page or, if possible, a page of descriptions of their math courses, enabling the user to geft more information about their programs and courses. Further information on OU Department of Mathematics and Statistics undergraduate courses is available here.

Prior to Fall 2010, our developmental courses in high school-level algebra were numbered MTH 011 (Elementary Algebra) and MTH 012 (Intermediate Algebra). Credit in those courses did not apply toward graduation, but courses transferred in as equivalent to them did satisfy prerequisites. (For more information on prerequisites, see our Placement and Prerequisites web page.) Beginning in Fall 2010, these courses have been renumbered at OU as MTH 0661 (061) and MTH 0662 (062) and so their equivalents will be given transfer credit. The new numbers are reflected in the lists below.

In most cases in which ac course that nominally seems to be equivalent to our MTE 2110 (210) is not listed, it is because the course does not have MTH 0662 (062) or higher as a prerequisite, and there is a firm rule adopted by our department and the Department of Teacher Development and Educational Studies in the School of Education and Human Services that such courses are not acceptable. For further information, please contact Darrell Schmidt, chief undergraduate adviser in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, at (248) 370-3433 or by e-mail [email protected]. The OU course APM 1663 (163) is a lower-level combination of APM 2663 (263) and MTH 2775 (275). It is unlikely that another school has an equivalent course. Students who have the equivalent of both APM 2663 (263) and MTH 2775 (275) (or 2556 (256)) will have met the APM 1663 (163) requirement for their program.

Beginning in 2005, we phased out APM 257 and MTH 256 and started offering APM 2555 (255) and MTH 2775 (275). Roughly 2555 (255) = 2559 (257) (but 2555 (255) also covers some matrix algebra, including eigenvalues), and 2556 (256) = 2775 (275). The courses are not exactly the same, but with one exception (see "IMPORTANT" below) we will consider them roughly interchangeable for the purposes of transfer equivalency and counting toward degrees in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The differences are that MTH 2775 (275) is somewhat more rigorous than MTH 2556 (256) and involves more proofs; it also is worth 4 credits rather than 3. Also, APM 2555 (255) covers some linear algebra as well as differential equations, and it, too, is 4 credits rather than 3. IMPORTANT: If a student needs APM 2555 (255) for a degree, then a course from another school that covers JUST differential equations and no linear algebra may not satisfy the degree requirement. Certainly a student who has completed equivalents for both MTH 2775 (275) and APM 2559 (257) has more than met the requirement of APM 2555 (255).

In Fall 2017, Oakland University is going to a four digit course numbering system. For Oakland University courses, the four digit numbers are the course numbers by the four digit system starting in Fall 2017, and the numbers in parentheses are the three digit numbers used prior to Fall 2017.

If there are any questions, additions, or corrections, please contact Darrell Schmidt, chief undergraduate adviser in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, at (248) 370-3433 or by e-mail [email protected] or fax ((248) 370-4184). We try to work with transfer students so that their previous course work can be incorporated into their Oakland University programs to the greatest extent possible.

Many of the equivalencies below are for courses that no longer exist but are included in case a student has taken the course in the past.

*Some students may have an older version of Math 115, which did not include trigonometry, and a separate trigonometry course, Math 125, needs to have been taken as well by those students, in order to have the equivalent of MTH 1441 (141).
**Math. 135, 205, and 215 together are equivalent to MTH 1554 (154), 1555 (155), and 2554 (254); because the Adrian catalog is ambiguous, it is not clear whether these are on a one-for-one basis, and students need to consult with the adviser in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
