Bioengineering
Welcome to the Department of Bioengineering!
The Department of Bioengineering is an interdisciplinary academic unit that bridges the School of Engineering and Computer Science and the College of Arts and Sciences. It offers a comprehensive education that integrates principles from biological sciences, engineering, and computational technologies. This multidisciplinary approach prepares students for rapidly evolving careers in cutting-edge fields that blend life sciences with advanced engineering applications, such as bioinformatics, biomedical imaging, sensor technology, tissue engineering, bionics, genetic engineering and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS).
The Department of Bioengineering offers both B.S.* and M.S. degrees, providing students with hands-on experience through laboratory work, industry partnerships and research opportunities.
The OU Pledge is the university’s commitment to provide undergraduate students with the opportunity for meaningful, hands-on learning. The students in the Department of Bioengineering engage in experiential learning through their participation in the following:
- Hands-on laboratories in most required BE courses
- Meaningful and applied Senior Design capstone projects
- Summer Internships programs
- Senior Projects, Honors College Thesis, or Independent Research under the mentorship of a BE faculty member
- Research Experience for Undergraduates (funded by American Heat Association - AHA)
- Participation in The Scientific Research Honor Society Sigma X
- Involvement in student organizations, such as EMBS (Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society), the Society of Women Engineers, the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science, and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers.
* The B.S. in Bioengineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, https://www.abet.org, under the General Criteria and the Bioengineering Program Criteria.
