Policy and Procedures for Nursing Laboratories

The health, safety and well-being of all who use the Oakland University School of Nursing laboratories are the primary focus of this policy. The laboratories included in this policy are the Health Assessment, Therapeutics, Community, and Simulation laboratories. This policy relates to all staff, students, vendors, and faculty that have business, learning, or exposure to any of the above laboratories. The goal is to ensure a safe working and learning environment for all.

The rules, procedures, and policies set forth may be changed as the COVID-19 issues change. The laboratories will comply with all Oakland University guidelines as well as the guidelines set forth from the CDC and state of Michigan governing bodies. All changes will be communicated to all who use the school of nursing laboratories. Communication will be maintained via the SON website, Moodle course sites, and OU email.

The guidelines set forth aim to effectively and safely reduce exposures to COVID-19 by detailing guidelines for PPE, social distancing, cleaning and disinfecting all lab areas. A health screening tool, created by Oakland University, must be completed on a daily basis by each person who is planning to come to campus.

Procedures - General

The following procedures listed must be followed by all persons who use any of the SON nursing laboratories. Compliance will be strictly enforced for the health and safety of all parties.

  • The OU health screening tool must be completed by ALL persons who will use the SON laboratories each time they come to campus.
  • Proof must be provided upon request of allowance to be on campus. This may be in the form of a phone display, hard copy or screenshot of approval to attend.
  • All faculty, or those designated by OU, must complete the COVID training and submit to the respective supervisor.
  • Face masks MUST be worn by ALL who enter the HHB. The face mask MUST remain in use the entire time the person is in the HHB regardless of where that may be (i.e., elevators, stairways, hallways, restroom etc.). If the mask is deemed unfit, dirty, or inappropriate in any way, a new surgical mask will be given. Masks MUST be worn to cover the nose and mouth at all times.
  • Social distance of at least 6 feet MUST be maintained at all times while in the HHB, labs or any part thereof. All must follow the floor markings where available.
  • NO congregating will be allowed at any time in any space.
  • Frequent handwashing is highly recommended. When soap/water is not available, hand sanitizer must be used frequently.
  • Unless otherwise noted, use your own personal equipment for lab sessions (i.e., stethoscopes, supply kits, pens, clipboards, ect).
  • Minimize touching to include only items necessary to support your learning. Lab faculty and staff will assist if needed to gather supplies.
  • If any person displays any signs of illness, they will be asked to leave the area immediately and proceed to Graham Health Center/Primary Care Provider for follow up care and instruction.
