All Main Campus buildings under boil water advisory

All buildings on Main Campus and Oakland West Center are under the City of Auburn Hills Boil Water Advisory

Advisory

Update: Wednesday, May 13 at 1:53 PM

Oakland University’s Main Campus and Oakland West Center are open. After the city of Auburn Hills declared a state of emergency due to a water main break affecting the surrounding communities, in an abundance of caution, a boil water advisory was also implemented for campus and remains in effect for all campus buildings even as water pressure is in the process of being restored.
The boil water advisory will be lifted after all water quality tests are completed. Please wait until both Auburn Hills and campus issue “all clear” messages before drinking the water.

What this means for you:
Tap water on campus is not approved for drinking. Restrooms and hand washing remain available and safe to use. We recognize that coming to campus without reliable access to drinking water is a hardship, and we have taken steps to address it.
Bottled water is now available to all departments at the University Services loading docks (Police & Support Services Bldg.)  – staff at the dock will assist with the loading of water into vehicles. Each department will be required to pick up water from University Services. Due to the amount of water bottles coming in, University Services will not have the capability to deliver products individually.  All departments will be required to sign upon receipt.

Why is campus open?
University leadership has assessed the situation carefully. Campus buildings are fully operational, despite some intermittent issues with water pressure. Restroom and hygiene facilities remain safe. We will continue to monitor conditions and will communicate any changes promptly. Please monitor conditions in your restrooms for both water pressure issues and sediment as the water from the Great Lakes Water Authority returns to campus.
As the pressure builds back to normal, there is a chance you may see brown water and/or sediment in the water being used in sinks and toilets on campus.
That is a normal process to flush the lines and is a precursor to water testing that needs to take place before the boil water alert is lifted.
If any plumbing issues arise due to the sediment, please contact Facilities Management at x2381 and/or visit the Facilities Management work order requests page to schedule a maintenance call.
We understand this is an inconvenient and stressful situation. We are committed to keeping you informed as conditions evolve.

Oakland University has begun experiencing inconsistent water pressure service across campus due to water infrastructure problems in neighboring communities.
Campus community members who experience consistently very low or no water pressure are advised to contact Curtis Whitsett in Facilities Management at (248) 370-2378 or [email protected] to report the issue.

Effective immediately, all buildings on Main Campus (including all apartments) are under the City of Auburn Hills Boil Water Advisory until further notice. This is in addition to the conserve water order for all of campus.
We appreciate that this raises many questions since there is no specific timeline on the boil alert. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available. The City of Auburn Hills and Oakland County Public Health have information available.
For those in housing, a specific message will be coming out with guidance. Those with housing-related questions can call (248) 370-3570. Please also check the Oakland University homepage banner for updates.
