The Department of Psychology offers undergraduate programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree. The psychology curriculum is structured to meet the needs of four types of students interested in majoring in psychology: students who plan to find employment after obtaining the bachelor's degree, students who plan to go to graduate school in psychology or a related field, students who plan to enter a field other than psychology that requires further formal training, and students who have a general interest in psychology.
Search for Three New Faculty Opens
The Department of Psychology has been informed that we may begin the process of searching for new faculty members. We are looking to hire individuals to fill three tenure track positions at the assistant professor level. The positions will be in Social Psychology, Community Psychology, and Basic Processes in Psychology . Qualified applicants are expected to have a PhD (applicants having ABD status will be considered) in psychology or a closely related field, with a clear emphasis on conducting scholarly research leading to publications in academic journals, teaching experience, and becoming involved in university and community service activities. Successful applicants should be prepared to teach one of the major’s core courses (introductory psychology, research methods, statistics) and other courses to be selected from their area of specialization. With all three positions we are interested in finding candidates who research and teaching interests are related to health issues broadly defined as we are striving to build a core faculty in this area. Details concerning the application process can be found here.
Information for Majors
A pamphlet entitled, "Majoring in Psychology at Oakland University," is available in the department office. An abbreviated form of this pamphlet can be found at the Advising Info pages of this website. Students planning to major in psychology should obtain a copy of this pamphlet, which offers suggested programs of study. Students are also encouraged to learn more about and become active participants in the OU chapter of the Psi Chi National Honor Society in Psychology .
Advising Forms
Most of the official forms needed by students majoring in Psychology are available both in the distribution bins located near the front door of Pryale Hall and on the "Advising Forms" page found within the "Advising" section of this website. Detailed explanations of independent projects classes such as Research Apprenticeships, Readings and Research projects, and Field Experiences can also be found here.
Student Grievances
Occasionally students find themselves in situations where they are unhappy or dissatisfied with some aspect of a course or their interaction with an instructor. The Department of Psychology, like all departments in the College, has a specific set of procedures to handle such situations in a fair and professional manner. A copy of these procedures can be downloaded by clicking here.
