Centralized Device Management
Centralized Device Management aims to strengthen Oakland University’s cybersecurity posture, streamline the device lifecycle, and improve the consistency of technology services and support across campus.
This initiative transitions IT device management from a distributed model to a centralized approach, enabling greater efficiency, consistency, and visibility across all managed devices. By centralizing key aspects of device deployment and management, the university is able to balance strong security with the trusted, high-quality support experience users expect.
The Centralized Device Management initiative is designed to strengthen cybersecurity, improve operational insight, and create a more consistent and efficient technology environment across campus.
A primary goal of this effort is to enhance security by reducing the variability in how devices are configured and managed. By establishing a unified management approach, the university can more effectively identify risks, reduce potential attack vectors, and respond quickly to emerging threats. Centralized tools also allow for timely deployment of security updates and patches across all university owned and managed devices, helping protect the data of students, faculty, and staff while supporting compliance requirements.
The initiative also enables improved reporting and data-driven decision-making. Modern device management platforms provide visibility into the full lifecycle of university-owned devices, including usage, performance, and compliance. These insights support more informed planning for device replacement, software adoption, and resource allocation, ensuring that technology investments remain effective and up to date.
In addition, this initiative promotes consistency across campus. Standardized configurations and management practices create a more familiar and predictable experience for users and IT support personnel alike, improving collaboration and simplifying troubleshooting.
Finally, centralized device management increases efficiency in how devices are procured, deployed, supported, and refreshed. A more standardized environment reduces complexity, improves software compatibility, and enables IT teams to deliver faster, more reliable support.
The Centralized Device Management initiative is a collaborative effort between various University Technology Services (UTS) teams. Together, they will design, implement, and support a scalable and sustainable device management model.
This initiative incorporates a suite of modern tools designed to automate and enhance the management of a large fleet of devices. Key capabilities include:
- Privileged Access Management
- Software Deployment and Patching
- Update Management
- Security Threat Detection and Mitigation
- Identity Management
- Data Encryption
- Policy Management
- Lost or Stolen Asset Management
- Data Reporting and Analytics
The Centralized Device Management initiative is currently in progress, with a target completion date in the year 2027 with a time period of 18 to 24 months.
