Randall Wyatt

Randall Wyatt is a native Detroiter who holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Wayne State University. Dr. Wyatt has held a faculty position at Oakland University since the year 2020.

He is a trained sociologist that primarily specializes in quantitative research on the intersection of race and politics. This research is social psychological and has been published in various academic journals including “Sociological Focus,” “The Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion,” and “Teaching Sociology” and in an edited academic book titled “Shameless Sociology: Critical Perspectives on a Popular Television Series.”

This empirical work has specifically looked at topics that include ethnoracial policy preferences concerning immigration and attitudes related to the social movement organization Black Lives Matter. Some of his scholarship also addresses ethnoracial imagery in popular media and how these visuals can be used as pedagogical tools to teach social theory.

As an educator, he has regularly taught many of the undergraduate courses offered by the sociology department as well as a graduate course in the social work department. These classes include Introduction to Sociology, Foundations of Sociological Theory, the Sociology of Deviance, Introduction to Research Methods, Computing Statistics, Racial and Ethnic Relations, Urban and Community Sociology, Sociology Capstone, and Fundamentals of Social Work Research.

Apart from fulfilling his duties as a scholar and teacher, Dr. Wyatt has acted as a mentor to sociology majors and minors, helping to facilitate their pathway to future studies in the discipline and a career in sociology. Dr. Wyatt currently serves as the Director of the Urban and Regional Studies minor.
