The immediate past president of the American Medical Association will be the featured speaker at an event hosted next week at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine.
Bobby Mukkamala, M.D., will visit campus on Oct. 20. He will speak in room 204 of Oakland University’s O’Dowd Hall.
A practicing otolaryngologist – head and neck surgeon in Flint, Mukkamala is expected to share his career and AMA experiences with medical students along with how they can get involved in organized medicine.
Mukkamala has been active in the AMA since residency. He is a past Michigan representative to the AMA Young Physicians Section, a past recipient of the AMA Foundation’s “Excellence in Medicine” Leadership Award and, for 13 years, he served as a member of the Michigan delegation to the AMA House of Delegates. In 2009 he was elected to the AMA Council on Science and Public Health and served as its chair from 2016 to 2017.
In addition to his leadership roles at the AMA, Mukkamala has served as a member of the Michigan State Medical Society Board of Directors since 2011, as board chair for two years, and as its president. He is also a past president of the Genesee County Medical Society (GCMS) and continues to serve on the GCMS Board of Directors.
"As today's medical students launch their careers, their generation will be tasked with coming up with creative solutions to health care's biggest challenges: AI integration, the rise in chronic disease and unsustainable health spending, and growing distrust in institutions,” said Mukkamala.
“I am thrilled to be speaking with OUWB medical students to learn their perspectives and share how they can get involved in organized medicine and make a difference in the lives of their patients and our profession."
Mukkamala was invited to speak by Rohit Ray, M2, president, AMA-Student Section at OUWB.
“I thought it would be a great idea for our students to be able to hear firsthand from someone who’s been a successful physician leader,” said Ray. “Plus, he’s local.”
Ray said he’s hopeful attendees take away inspiration from hearing Mukkamala.
“The biggest question I’ve been asking myself across these first two years of medical school is physician and what else?” he said. “What can I do with career in medicine, but also outside of medicine?”
“I hope students can find a tangible way to get involved,” said Ray. “You have to see what people have done and how to actually get there.”
The event is open to students, staff, and faculty from OUWB, Oakland University, and Corewell Health. There is no cost to attend and light refreshments will be served. Those who plan to attend are asked to register here.
