Rationale:Away electives (domestic and international) offer students opportunities in their program of study to engage with different patient populations, acquire cross-cultural competencies, and learn about health systems and other approaches to medical care. Students must complete all required clerkships at OUWB and follow the processes and procedures for any away elective to ensure the clinical experiences at other institutions meet LCME and OUWB standards. |

Definitions:Clinical Electives: A clinical elective is an educational experience that involves a minimum of 50% direct patient care or clinical decision-making that occurs in inpatient/outpatient, or procedural settings; involves history/physical, documentation, and/or team-based care. Non-Clinical Electives: Non-clinical electives are defined as an elective with <50% direct patient care or patient contact. They are educational experiences that enhance a student’s medical knowledge, professional development, or research skills without involving direct patient care or clinical decision-making. These electives may focus on areas such as: biomedical or clinical research, public health or community engagement, medical education, ethics, or humanities, healthcare leadership, administration, or quality improvement, and scholarly or independent study projects. |
