University Recreation and Well-Being COVID-19 Community Standards and Expectations:

Please review the following before beginning your workout. We ask that all members follow these guidelines while in our facilities:

Assess Your Health

  • If you are exhibiting any symptoms related to COVID-19: fever, cough, chills, shortness of breath, loss of sense of taste or smell, muscle pain, or headache do not come to the Oakland University Recreation Center.
  • All campus community members and guests are required to complete a health screening on days they plan to visit campus to utilize the recreation center and programs.
  • Once an individual completes the daily screening, they can display a green (go) banner with the date or red (stop - leave campus) banner on their phones.
  • Members wishing to access the recreation center will be required to show the green (go) banner on their phones before checking in to use the facility.
  • Rec access will not be given to those whose health screening form shows a red banner.

Face Mask Required

  • Members are required to wear cloth facial coverings throughout the facility at all times. University Recreation and Well-Being staff will be wearing a face covering and we need you to do the same.  The only time you will be permitted to remove your facial covering is while showering or while in the pool.

Come to the Rec Center “Rec Ready”

  • Wear your workout clothes to the Rec Center. Locker rooms and restrooms are available on a limited basis.  Showers are available on a limited basis.
  • Grab your Grizz ID or membership key fob, a water bottle, a lock if you plan to utilize day use lockers, and any other equipment you might want for your visit. Equipment check-out will not be available.
  • Contactless Transactions
  • You will be asked to self-scan your Grizz ID or Key Fob when entering and exiting the facility. This will both minimize touchpoints and assist with monitoring maximum capacity numbers.
  • Credit or debit payments are accepted for reduced contact payment options. We have gone cashless.
  • Memberships and lockers may be renewed online through our member portal.

Wash Your Hands

  • Hand washing and sanitizing should take place often, including pre and post workout.
  • Hand sanitizer is available throughout the facility

Physical Distancing

  • Please keep six feet between you and other members.
  • Minimize and avoid unnecessary physical contact with others.
  • Equipment has been moved to facilitate physical distancing while working out. Ask our staff if you can’t find your favorite piece. We are following a phased reopening plan, and will be adding more pieces when it is determined it is safe to do so.


  • In order to promote the health of our members we have enhanced cleaning and disinfection practices in accordance with federal, state and local recommendations.
  • Disposable wipes are available. We recommend cleaning your equipment before and after each use. Members utilizing strength equipment are required to clean and re-rack all equipment after use.
  • Equipment checkout is not available. Please bring your own equipment (locks for lockers, bands, yoga mats etc).
  • Look for and use the areas taped on the floor for free weight use. Members may only use equipment in those designated areas.
  • Do not attempt to use equipment that is non-operational or has any sign communicating nonuse for any reason stated by University Recreation & Well-Being.
  • Do not attempt to move any pieces of equipment, they have been spaced according to physical distancing guidelines.


  • Use of the Rec center will be on a first come, first serve basis.
  • All patrons will be required to show the green bar on their daily screening form.
  • The facility will have designated entrances and exits.
  • Guest passes and new membership sales have been suspended at this time.
  • Members should come to the Rec Center dressed in their workout clothes.
  • Please depart the facility after you have completed your workout to help support occupancy levels and access for all members.
  • Modified Activities and Limitations
  • University Recreation and Well-Being facility hours are subject to change. We encourage you to check our website for updated hours before you visit. 
  • Some activities and spaces may not be available*
  • In our phased reopening, the focus will be on cardio and free weights. Limited squat racks, bench presses, selectorized machines and strength equipment are available.
  • Group Exercise classes are limited to virtual classes only at this time.
  • Intramural sports programming is limited to virtual offerings and in-person events that meet physical distancing guidelines.
  • Club sports organizations may operate in accordance with Club Sports and university event and activity guidelines.
  • Wellness coaching, workshops and programs will continue as virtual offerings.
  • The Recreation & Athletic Outdoor Complex Superfield, OU Disc Golf Course and Priority Health Fitness Court are open for individual use from dawn to dusk.  Each outdoor space is a use-at-your-own-risk facility.  Users should always wash their hands and follow social distancing guidelines.
