At Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, we know that preparing our students to address their future patients’ nutrition-related health needs is an important component of their medical education.

Recently, we conducted a comprehensive nutrition education gap analysis to evaluate how we were doing in this area. The Curriculum Integration Committee convened a task force, identifying opportunities to expand competency-based nutrition education. The analysis demonstrated that nutrition education is vertically and horizontally integrated across our M1–M4 curriculum, with 30 published nutrition education competencies addressed (LCME: ED-13, ED-21).

OUWB also supports an active Medical Student Lifestyle Medicine Interest Group (LMIG) providing co-curricular and extracurricular experiences in culinary medicine and nutrition education (LCME: ED-3).

The LMIG demonstrates sustained student engagement and scholarly activity, including peer-reviewed publications highlighting the importance of nutrition in the promotion and maintenance of health.

In 2024, OUWB received a bronze certification from the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) Undergraduate Medical Education Curriculum Certification Committee, reflecting a comprehensive evaluation of lifestyle medicine curricular experiences, including nutrition education (LCME: ED-13, ED-21). This certification is listed in the ACLM Medical School Directory and underscores OUWB’s commitment to a curriculum that integrates the importance of nutrition and lifestyle medicine principles to support health outcomes.
