Jinhyun Kim, D.M.A.
Applied Instructor, Cello
Dr. Jinhyun Kim is an Instructor of Cello at Oakland University, where she teaches applied cello. She also serves on the faculties of Albion College, Spring Arbor University, and the Flint School of Performing Arts. A dedicated educator, she is a registered Suzuki teacher and a member of the American String Teachers Association. In addition to her academic roles, she is actively involved in youth music education. She has been invited to serve as a cello and chamber music coach at the MASTA String Camp and the MASTA Chamber Music Competition, and as part of her educational outreach, she is occasionally invited to lead cello sectionals for school and youth orchestras.
She is Principal Cellist of the Lansing Symphony Orchestra and Assistant Principal Cellist of the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra. In addition to her regular roles, she has performed with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Detroit Opera. She is also a core member of the ConTempus Quartet, a mid-Michigan-based contemporary chamber ensemble.
Her performance highlights include a debut recital at Kumho Art Hall in Seoul and two performances at Carnegie Hall as a competition winner. She was featured as solo cellist in Michigan Opera Theatre’s Twilight: Gods, which received significant acclaim from The New York Times, Opera News, and The New Yorker.
Originally from South Korea, Jinhyun earned her Bachelor of Music degree from Ewha Womans University and completed both her Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees at Michigan State University, where she served as a graduate teaching assistant and received numerous awards and grants.
As both a performer and educator, Jinhyun is dedicated to helping young musicians grow through supportive teaching and a strong commitment to musical excellence.
