Chiaoning Su

Assistant Professor

Su received her Ph.D. in media and communication from Temple University in 2015. As a researcher, she explores the political and cultural roles of journalism in times of disaster in a global and specifically Asian context. Her academic work examines how disasters constitute a social drama—a public violation of social norms—which transforms journalism into a site of identity construction and negotiation. Her work is published in Media, Culture and Society, Asian Journal of Communication, Asian Cinema, China Media Research and in the Palgrave Macmillan Memory Studies series, Memory in a Mediated World. Su has received several top paper and scholarship awards for her work in journalism and international communication studies.Chiaoning Su is an assistant professor in the Department of Communication and Journalism. She teaches a variety of undergraduate courses including Introduction to Journalism and News Writing and Introduction to Public Relations.

Prior to her academic career, Su worked as a communication specialist at Ogilvy Public Relations and for three political campaigns in Taiwan. She was recently elected as the Vice President of the Association for Chinese Communication Studies.

In her leisure time, Su likes to travel and read. She is always in search for a good story and the hidden messages behind the narratives.

See Su’s online portfolio for more information about her qualifications and a complete list of publications and conference presentations.
