American Sign Language
American Sign Language (ASL) is part of the Department of Communication, Journalism, and Public Relations and offers students the opportunity to explore one of the most dynamic and culturally rich languages in the world. ASL is more than a form of communication — it is a vibrant language deeply connected to the history, identity and community of Deaf culture.
Students in the ASL program learn from highly trained faculty, including instructors who are members of the Deaf community. Through interactive coursework and immersive experiences, students develop both linguistic skills and a deeper cultural understanding of the Deaf community.
The program also provides a strong pathway into Oakland University’s Communication and Deaf Studies minor, which prepares students for continued study and careers in ASL-related fields. Graduates often pursue roles as interpreters, educators, advocates and professionals working alongside Deaf and hard-of-hearing communities.
Aligned with the OU Pledge, Oakland University’s commitment to meaningful, hands-on learning, the ASL program brings language to life through engaging classroom conversations, campus initiatives, and real-world experiences.
