Unlock Your 2020 Orientation Experience

Orientation 2020 has concluded for the year. Thanks so much for joining us virtually this summer. For more details about upcoming orientations, visit our main orientation page. Thanks again for your support this year.

We have been working hard to create a remote orientation experience that gives you the tools needed to be prepared and comfortable when you begin courses this fall. While we will miss meeting you in person this summer, we know that you are excited to get started at OU and we are here to make your first experience with us as memorable as possible.

Follow the instructions below to get started. Completion of each step will unlock your access to the next. We can’t wait for you to officially become a Golden Grizzly!

Step 1: Complete the New Student Orientation module

When can I access the module?

24 hours after scheduling your orientation date.

When should this be completed?

As soon as possible, but ideally ahead of your orientation date.

How do I log-in?

Visit the New Student Orientation page on the eSpace learning platform and use your OU NetID and password to gain access.

How does the module work?

You'll complete online interactive videos, activities, and quizzes about life on campus, resources that will support you in your first year, and have the chance to confirm your major before you register for courses.

Step 2: Advising and registration on your scheduled orientation date

New Student Orientation Details

How will I know when and where to meet my adviser?

The link to the session and your assigned time will be sent to your OU email within 24 hours of scheduling your orientation.

How should I prepare?

Be sure you can log-in to your OU email account/MySAIL so that you can join your virtual session via Google Meet.

What are the technology requirements?

Participating in your virtual session will require a computer, tablet or smartphone with internet capabilities. If you don't have access to technology resources, let us know by emailing gold@oakland.edu so we can make alternative arrangements for you.

Will I need specific software?

Your virtual session will use Google Meet. Luckily, this is already built into your OU student email account so no additional purchase is required. Be sure to check out our quick how-to videos about using Google Meet on a mobile device or desktop before your orientation.

What should I know before my orientation day?

Review our Before Orientation guide to understand what to expect.

What documents will I need to participate?

You'll find digital versions of everything you need in our virtual student folder on eSpace.

What if I need registration help after my session is over?

Orientation Assistants are available to help students Monday-Friday from 9 am-4 pm in our Virtual Registration Help Room.

Parent/Family Orientation Details

Can my parent/family member join me in this virtual session?

Only the invited participants should be present and have access to the virtual advising session. This means that other participants such as friends and/or family should not be present. We want time to get to know you and focus on your participation, registration and any questions you might have.

How can my parent/family members learn more about the first academic year at OU?

We encourage them to review a pre-recorded session on Youtube that provides a detailed overview of what to expect in their student’s first year at OU. If they have any questions after viewing this session, we encourage them to contact us at fyac@oakland.edu

Step 3: Participate in four essential sessions

Essential sessions have concluded for orientation 2020. Thanks so much for joining us virtually this summer. If you were unable to participate live in any of the sessions, we've got you covered. Here are recorded versions of the sessions so you can watch whenever you have the chance.

Step 4: Join us for Campus Kickoff

OU's 2020 Campus Kickoff events have concluded. Thanks so much for joining in the fun this summer. If we missed you at the August events, here's are few things you can do to prepare for the fall semester:

  • Get your student ID
The GrizzCard is the official picture identification card of Oakland University. Think of it as your passport to OU. Whether you are grabbing a bite to eat, checking out a library book, going to the Rec Center or cheering on the Golden Grizzlies, your GrizzCard makes it happen.

  • Visit the OU Bookstore website to begin purchasing your books
Pre-order your books online so you can pick them up on your first day of classes.

  • Take a virtual tour of campus
Click around our interactive map to find locations of buildings, student services and anything OU related. Youtube clips are imbedded in each building description and give you the chance to experience what each space is like even before you set foot on campus.
