Barbara and Allen Gough Scholarship

Description

Barbara and Allen Gough have made a generous gift to provide a $8,500 scholarship to a student enrolled in the Human Resource Development program at OU. An award committee will select the recipient. The winner will be notified of the award by mail.

This award is approximately $8,500 and may be renewed if the student recipient continues to meet the eligibility requirements. The scholarship may be used for tuition and books.

Eligibility Requirements: 

  • Undergraduate students in Human Resource Development department
  • Cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher
  • Have previously had their studies interrupted for 2 years or more
Examples of Interrupted Studies:

Students may have many reasons and examples of interrupted studies. Interruptions may occur in the completion of high school, delay in post-secondary education or completion of college. To clarify what is meant by "interrupted studies", several examples follow. Please note that there are many more examples of interrupted studies that would be relevant, and as a result this list is not exhaustive.
  • Graduating from high school, moving on to the military for two years or more and then enrolling at Oakland University sometime later.
  • Graduating from high school and enrolling at Oakland University at least two years later.
  • Completing a GED as an adult and continuing on to study at Oakland University.
  • Completion of an associate's degree and enrolling at Oakland University at least two years later.
  • Beginning undergraduate work at Oakland University or another four-year institution, discontinuing studies for two years or more and returning to complete an undergraduate degree at Oakland University
Application for this scholarship does not need to occur at the beginning of the student's time at Oakland University. Students may have been enrolled for some time and should be currently enrolled at OU.

George R. and Helen Klein Memorial Scholarship

DescriptionBarry Klein, a 1968 graduate of Oakland University, established the George R. and Helen Klein Memorial Scholarship in 1997 in honor of his parents. He credits OU for teaching him to think critically and question why things are the way they are. 

Eligibility Requirements:
  • Graduate students enrolled in the Counseling program
  • Maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA
  • Have a primary interest in addictions counseling, education and/or treatment
  • Financial need may be considered

Gina and Jeff Petherick Endowed Scholarship Award

DescriptionThe Gina and Jeff Petherick Endowed Scholarship was created to help those pursuing a Human Resource Development degree, whose lives are guided by strong values and principles, and who possess a desire to love and serve others less fortunate as they journey through life.

This non-renewable award is approximately $1,000-$2,000 and may vary year to year. The scholarship may be used for tuition and books. 

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Full or part-time undergraduate student with a declared major in the Human Resource Development program
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 overall as well as in coursework in the declared major
  • Completed application and essay. The essay should detail the student's interest in his or her prospective career in the field of Human Resource Development and include insights on the importance of ethics, compassion and service to others.

    DescriptionEligibility Requirements:
    • Be a part or full-time graduate student enrolled in a degree-seeking program in the School of Education and Human Services
    • Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5
    • Have completed at least one semester at OU
    • Describe interest in graduate studies, professional objectives, relevant work experiences, and relevant community service.

    Harold and Pearl Cafone Graduate Studies Award

    DescriptionProfessor Emeritus Harold Cafone was instrumental in the development of the Ph.D. program in Reading and is also remembered for his early involvement in the Guizhou Education Exchange Program. Family and friends of Hal Cafone have established the Harold and Pearl Cafone Graduate Studies Fund to honor his work. An award committee will select the awardee(s). The winner(s) will be notified of the award by mail. 

    Awards may vary from year to year with a maximum of $1,500 being awarded annually. Awards may be used to support tuition and other costs of the Guizhou - Oakland University Education Exchange program.

    Harry Hahn Reading Endowment Award

    DescriptionThe Harry Hahn Reading Award may be used to pursue scholarly, teaching or service activities in reading, writing and language arts. Amounts awarded will vary based on needs as outlined in the proposal; the maximum amount awarded in any one year is $1,500.

    Eligible students for the Harry Hahn Reading Endowment Award are Ph.D. students or full or part-time faculty members in the Department of Reading and Language Arts.

    Jacqueline I. Lougheed Master's Scholarship

    Description

    Jacqueline I. Lougheed made a generous gift to provide approximately $1,000-$2,000 annual awards to one or more Education Specialist or Doctoral students pursuing graduate work in Educational Leadership. Students enrolled in either of these SEHS programs may apply. An award committee will select the awardee(s) based on exemplary student achievement, dedication to educational leadership, and personal and professional goals. The winner(s) will be notified of the award by mail.

    This non-renewable award is approximately $500 - $1,000 and may vary year to year. The award may be used for:

    • tuition and books at Oakland University, including professional development courses at the University
    • travel and related expenses for attending professional conferences related to educational leadership
    • expenses related to completion of a Master's action research project

    Eligibility Requirements: 

    • Education Specialist or Doctoral students pursuing graduate work in Educational Leadership
    • have completed at least 24 credit hours
    • have a GPA of 3.3 or above in the Program.
    • submit an essay and written recommendations from two department faculty members and one immediate supervisor or school principal at your place of employment.

    Jeff Dupuis Award in Human Resource Development

    DescriptionThe W. Jeff Dupuis Award in Human Resource Development emphasizes and supports the opportunities for students to engage in theoretical and practical learning experiences in the area of labor and employment relations. Awardees will be selected based on their minor course of study, GPA, and essay. Full- and part-time students are encouraged to apply. Successful recipient(s) will be notified of the award by mail. Award recipients who continue to meet the award requirements are eligible to reapply for future awards.

    Eligibility Requirements:

    • a declared minor course of study in Labor and Employment Studies or Employment Studies and Standards 
    • a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher
    • Submit a written essay of between 500 and 750 words discussing the applicant's career goals and/or accomplishments as they relate to the study of labor and work in conjunction with the facilitation of the success of the American worker

    Recipients can reapply for the Jeff Dupuis Award if the student recipient continues to meet eligibility requirements (amounts may vary from year to year). As many as two awards will be given per academic year.

    Applicants applying for other awards in the School of Education and Human Services are eligible to apply for the W. Jeff Dupuis Award as well. Students can apply for and be considered for more than one award from the School of Education and Human Services.

    Keane/Demarest Endowment

    DescriptionThe Keane/Demarest Oakland University Endowment for Berkley School District Students, created by Dr. William Keane and his wife Geraldine Keane, benefits incoming freshmen from the Berkley School District. 

    Eligibility Requirements: 
    • a graduate of the Berkley School District
    • a full time undergraduate student planning to major in education
    • have a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher
    • maintain a GPA at Oakland University of 3.0 or higher
    • submit an essay of no less than 500 words detailing the development of your interest in elementary education

    This award may be renewed for up to four years if the recipient continues to meet the criteria.

    Ken Morris Center for the Study of Labor and Work Scholarship

    DescriptionThe endowment supports the Ken Morris Center and the labor relations program, as well as scholarships for students studying labor relations.

    Eligibility Requirements: 
    • Labor and Employment Studies declared as your minor
    • Cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0
    • Have at least 12 credit hours remaining to be completed before graduation
    • Be nominated by two active labor union members using the nomination form
    • An essay of between 500 and 750 words describing your career goals and/or accomplishments as they relate to the study of labor and work and facilitation of the success of the American worker.
    As many as two awards will be given per semester. Recipients can reapply for the Ken Morris Scholarship in future years.

    Lewis Pino Memorial Scholarship in Science Education

    DescriptionIn order to qualify for the $1,000 (amount may vary) award, you must be an Elementary or Secondary Education student at Oakland University with an endorsement in Chemistry, Physics or Integrated Science. An award committee will select the awardee and notify the recipient. Recipients are eligible to reapply in subsequent years.

    Eligibility Requirements:
    • undergraduate student enrolled in the elementary or secondary education program
    • GPA of 3.0 or above
    • commitment to the study and education of chemistry, physics or integrated science; and
    • submit an essay of 500 or more words detailing your interest in the field of education and chemistry, physics or integrated science

    Louise Coallier Memorial Endowed Award

    DescriptionThe family and friends of Louise Coallier made a generous gift to provide an annual award to a student enrolled in Elementary Education at Oakland University.

    Non-renewable awards of approximately $1,000 will be given annually, although this may vary year to year.

    Marjorie K. Simmons Endowed Fund

    Description

    Marjorie K. Simmons, a member of the School of Education and Human Services Resource Development Board, established an endowed award in 2008 to benefit undergraduate students in the School. By creating the award to be renewable for up to 5 years, Ms. Simmons has a lasting impact on the recipient of the Marjorie K. Simmons Endowed Fund. The recipient has a consistent award to rely on each year while financing his or her college education.

    The Marjorie K. Simmons Endowed Fund is $1,000 per year for up to five consecutive years to any undergraduate student in the School of Education and Human Services who has demonstrated leadership skills.

    Eligibility Requirements: 

    • OU undergraduate students in the School of Education and Human Services
    • Leaders in their community, demonstrated by taking on leadership roles in high school and/or college student organizations, athletics, etc.
    • Students with a minimum GPA of 3.0
    • Have financial need as determined by Oakland University’s Financial Aid office

    There is no application for this award. Recipients are chosen by the Financial Aid office.

    Mary Joyce Pagano Memorial Award

    DescriptionMary Joyce Pagano was a member of the 1963 Charter Class of Oakland University. She taught physics and chemistry at Pontiac Northern High School for 17 years and was a role model for young teachers. 

    This is a non-renewable award.

    Eligibility Requirements: 
    • Undergraduate students enrolled in Elementary or Secondary Education
    • Select a student teaching placement in Pontiac or another urban setting
    • Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher
    • Financial need is considered, but not a requirement for this award

    Description
    This is a non-renewable, $3,000 scholarship. One scholarship is awarded per academic year. Applicants must be enrolled in the SEHS at Oakland University as a full-time, undergraduate student, who will have junior status (56 credits) at the time of scholarship distribution, and will have two or more full-time semesters remaining in their first academic degree program. Applicants must maintain a 3.00 GPA in their major field of study and a cumulative 3.00 GPA at OU.

    Sidney W. Graber Memorial Award

    DescriptionThe family of Dr. Sidney Graber has made a generous gift to provide one $1,000 award annually to a student pursuing graduate work in Special Education. The gift was made in memory of Dr. Graber, the founder of the Special Education program at Oakland University. An award committee will select the awardee. The winner will be notified of the award before registration for the Winter semester.

    Student Leader Success Scholarship

    DescriptionThe purpose and goal of this award is to recruit first-year undergraduate students from urban settings and urban school districts who have declared elementary education or human resource development as their career interest and program of study. The program will include a mentoring component designed to support students, promote academic excellence, build a sense of community, and develop leadership skills and a sense of professional identity as a teacher. The mentoring program will include topic discussions reflecting current ethical leadership issues that teachers face.

    Eligibility Requirements: 
    • Citizens of the United States of America and residents of the State of Michigan.
    • Accepted to Oakland University directly from high school and who will be in their first year in the Elementary Education or Human Resource Development undergraduate program.
    • Full-time students at the University during the Fall and Winter semesters for which they receive the scholarship.
    • Students who have identified elementary education or human resource development as their career interest and intend to pursue a degree in elementary education or human resource development.
    • Preference will be given to students who attended an urban high school or have a strong affiliation with an urban center.
    • Students who have a recalculated high school grade point average (HS GPA) of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale. (English, Math, Science, Foreign Language and Social Science).
    • Demonstrated leaders and/or volunteers in extracurricular and work-related activities.

    Study Abroad Award

    Description

    The Study Abroad Award is for students interested in studying abroad through an Oakland University travel abroad program. This award is available to students in the School of Education and Human Services.

    Eligibility Requirements:

    • Be a student in the School of Education and Human Services
    • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above
    • Preference is given to those students who have not yet traveled abroad.

    Thomas A. Yatooma (SECS) Memorial Scholarship

    Description
    This is a non-renewable, $3,000 scholarship awarded to a student with major standing in the School of Engineering and Computer Science. Applicants must be enrolled in the SECS as a full-time, upperclassman undergraduate student, who will have junior status (56 credits) at the time of scholarship distribution, and will have two or more full-time semesters remaining in their first academic degree program. Applicants must maintain a minimum 3.20 GPA in a major field of study and a 3.25 cumulative GPA at Oakland University.

    Toni S. and Kenneth Walters Student Literacy Scholarship

    DescriptionDr. Toni S. Walters was influential during her Oakland University teaching career. A number of her former students, as a tribute to her influence, celebrated her career and retirement by honoring Dr. Walters with gifts toward a scholarship bearing her and her husband’s name. With those gifts, Dr. Walters is establishing an endowment for an annual tuition award benefiting students studying literacy. 

    The award can be used for tuition, fees, books and other costs associated with enrollment in the School of Education and Human Services.

    Eligibility Requirements: 
    • Full or part-time undergraduate, masters or doctoral student with a declared major in the Reading and Language Arts program 
    Please note since there is not an undergraduate Reading and Language Art program currently, the committee has selected to use Reading courses on an applicant’s transcript as evidence of studying literacy when evaluating undergraduate student applications. 
    • Maintain a 3.2 or higher GPA. 
    • Discussing how they serve one’s community, emphasizing on commitment to ethnically and economically diverse communities in urban/metropolitan educational institutions.
    • Priority will be given for students who have demonstrated service in the field of literacy on either Oakland University’s campus (which could include a student organization) or through community service.

    Students may only receive one Walters Endowed award in each academic year, but are otherwise eligible to apply for Endowment awards in other academic years.

    Description

    An award committee will select the awardee(s) based on exemplary student achievement, dedicated community service, commitment to your profession, and/or financial need. The winner(s) will be notified of the award by mail.

    • A full time undergraduate student in the School of Education and Human Services

    • An essay describing how you have distinguished yourself academically. Describe awards and honors you have received, your involvement in the community, and your professional objectives
    • Financial need, determined by OU's Financial Aid Office, may be considered, but is not required to apply
