Master of Science in Information Technology Management
4 + 1

A degree that puts managerial and technical skills at the forefront, the Master of Science in Information Technology Management (MSITM) at Oakland University’s School of Business Administration prepares students for a career managing information and technology in today’s digital world. Through a program based on experiential learning, students in the SBA’s MSITM program learn the practical skills they need to advance in their careers.

Graduates of the MSITM program will be prepared to climb the career ladder in pursuit of such positions as business analyst, enterprise data architect, business intelligence analyst, information assurance network security engineer, security and network management engineering, IT project manager, privacy officer, IT strategy consultant or IT sourcing manager. The program enhances students’ knowledge of how firms use information technology to address business problems by offering three concentration areas:

  • Data Management and Business Analytics
  • IS Networking and Security
  • IS Strategy and Management
The program is structured around three modules:
  • Foundation Courses – Provides analysis, design and implementation skills
  • Elective Courses – Develops in-depth knowledge in a specific area of interest
  • Capstone Project – Synthesizes students’ knowledge and applies it to address issues in one or more areas of concentration

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of computer and information systems managers is expected to grow 16 percent from 2006 through 2016, which is faster than average for all occupations. The Bureau notes that people with management skills and an understanding of business practices, combined with specialized technical knowledge and strong communication skills, will find excellent opportunities as companies increasingly look to technology to drive revenue.

The MSITM 4+1 Plan is a combined bachelor/master degree program that provides high-achieving students an opportunity to complete a bachelor's and master's degree in less time than would be required if the two degrees were done independently. It is designed for students who are high academic achievers and creates an integrated learning experience along several knowledge paths. The MSITM 4+1 Plan students will be able to earn their master's degree by completing 24 credits (8 courses instead of 10) beyond the undergraduate MIS major requirements.

Students accepted for the MSITM 4+1 Plan must have a minimum overall undergraduate GPA of 3.2, and a 500 on the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Students may apply to MSITM 4+1 Plan and be offered deferred admission to the graduate program at the end of the junior year and may begin enrollment in graduate courses during the first semester of the senior year. Students who apply must also have completed half of the departmental credits required for the MIS major.

Students offered deferred admission will remain classified as undergraduates until they have completed all undergraduate degree requirements. At that time, students who have maintained an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.2 and have earned a 3.0 or above GPA in each of the double-counted graduate courses (MIS 563 - Networks, and MIS 546 - Business Analysis and Modeling), will be reclassified as a graduate student through Graduate Study.
