I want to acknowledge Academic and Student Services and Oakland’s Honors College Dean Graeme Harper for creating such welcoming, warm and inspiring environment for our Presidential Scholars.
As you get to know Dean Harper, you will learn that he is among your greatest advocates and supporters, a person of high integrity who is a role model to many.
What lies ahead of you is a great adventure – perhaps the greatest adventure of your lives – where you will make discoveries about the academics that lay at the foundation of our civilization, the ever-changing natural and social world, and of course, discoveries about yourselves.
This is where you will write the story of your future.

When you go out into the world…. People will be so impressed with your abilities and talents, and invariably ask: Where do you go to school, and after graduation, of course, where did you go to college?
When you get asked that question, I want you to pause for a moment before you answer and let them wonder for a moment, and then tell them, “I’m a Golden Grizzly.”
You are a Golden Grizzly…. And you stand out because of who you are and what you will accomplish here.
