About the OU Counseling Center

The Oakland University Counseling Center, located in the Graham Health Center has been serving the students and staff of the university for over 30 years. We provide a broad range of mental health services which include:

  • Personal Counseling
  • Psychological and Psychoeducational Testing
  • Career Testing and Counseling
  • Substance Abuse Evaluation, Treatment, and Prevention
  • Consultation and Outreach
  • Crisis Intervention

Counseling is provided by licensed psychologists and interns. Staff that are not fully licensed are supervised by licensed psychologists.

If you are a student, you can take advantage of the Counseling Center's services. Counseling services are based on a short-term model. If long-term counseling is indicated, the staff is happy to help with outside referrals. If you are an OU staff member, we will be happy to consult with you and facilitate a referral within the community.

In order to meet with a counselor, you can call or come in to the Counseling Center and schedule an appointment. Same day appointments may be available, subject to counselor availability.

We at the Oakland University Counseling Center understand and recognize the multitude of emotions (e.g., anxiety, fear, grief, anger, etc.) students, faculty, and staff may be experiencing during the ongoing pandemic and social unrest. In efforts to best support you, our staff are continuing to offer remote clinical services through phone and video conferencing. If you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment, please contact (248) 370-3465.

Also, please see below for some helpful links on how to manage anxiety and stress with regards to the Covid-19 outbreak:

The OUCC staff join all of those saddened and grieving over the history of violent and egregious acts against communities of color, most recently exemplified by the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and more. We recognize the biases and prejudices ingrained within our society by way of systemic racism and pledge support for all of those impacted by these traumatic events. We pledge to do our own internal work around race, particularly those of White and European descent, to shine a light on those underlying biases and prejudices that have been internalized.

The OUCC is excited to announce 6 new groups for the fall!

Please read the descriptions below and fill out this form to register for groups.

Adulting 101 (Social Anxiety & Relationships): Being an adult...and a student...can sometimes be difficult and exhausting.  Many of us are rusty  when it comes to socializing and being around others.  Sometimes this can make us anxious and not know how to behave around others or how to form strong relationships.  If you would like to learn more about ways to reduce feelings of social anxiety and interpersonal isolation, in a supportive and nonjudgmental environment, this is the group for you! (Held 2x/week)

Academic Success Support Group: Learn about how to better manage academic stress and life stress. Gain helpful tips on improving coping skills, study habits, time management, reducing procrastination, increasing motivation and discipline, and improving organization.

Self-Esteem & Self-Care: Many people have thoughts about how they would like to be different or a desire to change some aspect about themselves.  This is normal.  However, taken to an extreme, this can hurt how we feel about ourselves and may lead to mental health concerns like anxiety and depression. In this group, you will learn the basics of identifying, coping with, and reducing symptoms of low self-esteem and ways in which to live the most productive and satisfying life possible. Use the power of your mind to change the way you think, behave, and feel emotionally. Learn to prioritize self-care as an essential part of overall well-being.

Coping Skills & Special Topics Support Group: This group is geared toward thinking "outside of the box."  It will have various sessions on learning and discussing interesting psychological principles and how to apply them to your life to live more fully.  Additionally, general coping skills for daily stressors will be discussed. There will also be special sessions for various groups and organizations on campus to discuss their particular needs.
General Support Group: This is a general support group for those looking for topics on various ways to make your life better.  It includes topics from the other support groups such as coping strategies for anxiety and depression, improving relationships, dealing with academic difficulties, improving self-esteem, among other areas.
