Professional Licensure and Certification Program Disclosures
Oakland University is required to provide general (public) disclosures to students in programs that lead to licensure or certification, regardless of instructional modality. Direct (individual) disclosures are provided to students located in a state where Oakland University does not meet or has not determined if they meet the educational requirements for licensure or certification. This rule applies to programs that are either:
- Designed to meet educational requirements for a specific professional license or certification that is required for employment in the occupation.
- Advertised as meeting the educational requirements for a specific professional license or certification.
Oakland University has evaluated all of its professional licensure or certification programs. Each program has been assigned one of the following disclosure statuses for each state and/or U.S. territory:
- Meets requirements - a student attestation is not required
- Does Not Meet requirements - a student attestation is required or student can not be enrolled in the program
- Undetermined - a student attestation is required or student can not be enrolled in the program
Oakland University makes every effort to ensure licensure information is current; however, licensure regulations change frequently. Please see the table below for program licensure or certification information. If you live outside Michigan and are considering enrolling in a program that leads to a professional license or certification, we highly encourage you to contact the appropriate state licensing agency in your state or the state in which you intend to work to seek the most up-to-date information about state licensure or certification requirements.
Please select a program from the pulldown below, click submit, and the state information will display below.
The status provided in the tool above indicates whether these educational programs, if successfully completed, meet a state's educational requirements. OU cannot provide verification of an individual's eligibility to meet licensure or certification requirements unrelated to its educational programming, such as background checks or years of work experience. State board information can be found by clicking on the State Board name.
For programs leading to professional licensure or certification, a student’s location at the time of initial enrollment—per 34 CFR §668.14(b)(32)(i–iii)—will be defined as their physical location during the first semester of their program.
Students who indicate they will be living outside of Michigan, in a state where Oakland University does not meet the educational requirements for licensure or where a determination has not been made can not be enrolled into the program unless they complete and attestation. The student must attest that they intend to seek licensure in a state where Oakland University meets the educational requirements for licensure or they cannot be enrolled in the program.
Potential changes to program requirements
Licensure and certification information is reviewed and updated on this site regularly. Students who plan to pursue licensure or certification outside of Michigan should be aware that state licensure or certification requirements are subject to change. While a program may originally meet the educational requirements for licensure, changes in requirements could impact the program's ability to meet any new educational requirements. Students are encouraged to check with their state licensure board to confirm licensure or certification requirements.
Relocating during the course of a program
Prospective and current students should keep in mind that licensing or certification requirements vary by state and that relocating to another state during the course of a program could impact the student’s ability to obtain licensure in the new state after graduation. If a student is considering relocating, they should check OU’s public licensure disclosure table, contact their program advisor, or check with the state's licensure board for licensure and certification eligibility requirements.
If a program does not meet or it is undetermined if the program meets the educational requirements for licensure or certification in the state in which the student is located at the time of initial enrollment, Oakland University cannot enroll the student unless they complete an attestation stating they intend to seek employment in a state where the program does meet the educational requirements for licensure.
The attestation process is designed to help students make informed decisions about their education and career. The attestation also serves as a crucial tool to ensure that the student engages in the decision-making process with full awareness and consent. Please note that the attestation requirement only applies to students who are citizens of the United States.
An attestation must include the following items: student’s name, program of study, where they intend to seek licensure after graduation, signature, and date.
Please note that Oakland University’s program curriculum is designed to meet the educational requirements for professional licensure, certification, or similar credentials within the state of Michigan.
If you are located outside of Michigan or outside the United States, it is important to check with the appropriate regulatory or licensing body in your country to confirm whether this program will be recognized before enrolling.
