00:01 >> [MUSIC] Since I've been attending Oakland University,

00:04 I've never had so much discipline.

00:06 Now that I see the work ethic that I've put in and how much it's reflected back.

00:11 I can't stop. My name is Lyzbeth Payne I

00:15 live in Macomb township and I'm pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Education.

00:21 I always loved my art teacher.

00:24 She just inspired me so much.

00:26 She taught me so much things I was genuinely interested in.

00:29 I thought I want to be her when I grow up.

00:33 I received my associate's degree at

00:36 Macomb Community College and Oakland University was

00:38 willing to transfer all of my credits and

00:40 give me a transfer scholarship through Phi Theta Kappa.

00:43 I've received two different scholarships and they helped tremendously when it

00:47 comes to paying for books and extra tools you need for the class.

00:50 It's just been a lifesaver.

00:52 Having two kids, I needed to be close to home if I wanted to go back to school.

00:57 Juggling a baby and school,

00:59 it's difficult, but at the same time you push yourself, it's worth it.

01:02 I feel like in the end this is going to be what I've always wanted.

01:06 My biggest dream after receiving

01:09 my bachelor's degree from Oakland will be to open an art studio.

01:12 Somehow, I've got to make an impact on young children in art.

As a young mother, Lyzbeth Payne had to put her college career on hold to raise her children. But her dream of earning a degree never faltered. So she finished her associate’s degree, then transferred to OU where all her hard-earned credits were accepted. Now she’s working toward her bachelor’s degree and showing her children how ambition leads to success, at a university that values:

  • Flexible Scheduling: OU offers more than 140 academic programs and degrees in every discipline imaginable, and we have adapted many programs to fit within the lifestyle and demands of adult learners.
  • Ease of Credit Transferability: Use our online credit transfer equivalency tool for a quick overview of how your credits may transfer. Advisers are also ready to speak with you about your specific options.
  • Scholarship Opportunities: From scholarships and grants to loans and payment plans, we’ll make sure your journey through college is affordable. In fact, OU offers more than 300 departmental scholarships, including many specifically for transfer students and one automatically awarded to students 65 years and older.
  • A Welcoming Environment: Juggling responsibilities like work, children and extracurriculars — plus taking college courses — can leave you feeling overwhelmed. We’re proud to offer an array of services and resources to help ease that burden and ensure you succeed.

“After having my son, OU welcomed me back with open arms and another scholarship. I’m now showing my older daughter the importance of finishing your education.”
