Annual Events

The Gender and Sexuality Center is proud to host a number of campus events supporting the LGBTQIA community at Oakland University. For more information on any of the below events, either visit the Gender and Sexuality Center in the Oakland Center, Room 47 or email us at GSC@oakland.edu.

Event locations and details vary, registration maybe required.

GSC Welcome Reception

The Gender & Sexuality Center Welcome Reception is held annually at the beginning of the fall semester, and is open to all students, staff and faculty. The reception offers the opportunity to become familiar with the LGBTQIA programs and services available at OU, as well as meet staff from the Gender and Sexuality Center. The event also introduces the leadership of the LGBTQIA Employee Resource Group and the executive board of the Gender & Sexuality Alliance. Food and refreshments are provided for those in attendance. No registration is required.

This year's LGBTQ+ Welcome Reception will take place on September 7, 2023 from 3 PM - 6 PM in 159 and 104J North Foundation Hall.

Transgender Day of Remembrance

Centered around November 20th of every year, though the event date is flexible, Transgender Day of Remembrance honors the memory of those lives that were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence. Though the event details change from year to year, previous years have included, vigils, panel discussions and memorial displays. No registration is required.

TDOR 2023 will take place on Friday, November 17th.

World AIDS Day

Centered around December 1 of every year, though the event date is flexible, World AIDS Day is intended to raise awareness of HIV, remember those who have died, and break down the stigma that still surround the disease. Event details vary from year to year, though previous years have included, display of the NAMES Memorial Quilt, guest speakers and filming screenings. Registration is not required.

For 2023, a roaming history display will be available outside 104J NFH on and around Worlds AIDS Day on December 2, 2023.

Pride Month

Pride Month is held every April and is open to all students, staff and faculty. Pride Month is hosted to celebrate OU’s diversity in sexual orientation and gender identity with events that raise awareness, promote education, and foster a sense of community. It is our goal to make Pride Month a university-wide collaboration between campus partners to present Oakland University’s students, staff, and faculty and the surrounding community with the opportunity to learn from and about the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, questioning, and asexual (LGBTQIA) community. Events include:

  • Lavender Graduation Celebration (registration required)
  • Gay-Straight Alliance's Annual Drag Show
  • Pride Prom
  • Guest Lecturers
  • Film Screenings

OU Pride Month 2024 will occur from March 11 - April 11, 2024.
