Accelerated B.A. to M.A. in Communication

Undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing a master’s in communication degree may be eligible to enroll in the accelerated B.A. to M.A. provided they meet GPA and major requirements.

Students who apply with junior standing, or in year three of their bachelor’s degree, can graduate with a bachelor’s as well as a master’s degree in communication in five years. In order to graduate with a B.A. and M.A. degree in five years, students will have to take a summer course at the end of each of the years three, four, and five. If graduating in the Spring of year five, students may opt to take three M.A. courses in one of the two semesters that year.

Students accepted into the program must enroll in COM 5000: Introduction to Graduate Study in Communication in the fall semester of their fourth year. This course will replace the B.A. capstone. In the winter semester of year four students will enroll in two 5000 level COM courses in lieu of COM electives or area group requirements. Students are required to enroll in COM 5001: Philosophy of Communication and one other 5000 level COM course of their choice.

Admissions Criteria

Students should apply in year three or when they are halfway through the completion of their undergraduate program. To be considered, applicants must fulfil the following criteria:

  • a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher and a COM major GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • the completion of at least six undergraduate courses in communication

*Note: Students must maintain a grade point average of 2.7 or higher to remain in the MA program.
