Call for Proposals


You are invited to participate in Michigan’s third annual statewide conference on sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) issues in education. This year’s conference will be held on Friday, February 7, 2014, at at the Auburn Hills Marriott Pontiac at Centerpoint in Pontiac, Michigan. The conference is being hosted by the School of Education & Human Services’ SOGI Initiative and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Conference Objectives:

• Promote preK-12/university dialogue about important issues involving sexual orientation and gender identity in schools
• Provide preK-12 staff, teachers and administrators with opportunities to inform and influence how schools/colleges of education are preparing pre-service teachers and administrators to effectively address these areas of difference
• Identify ways that schools/colleges of education and community-based resources can assist preK-12 practitioners in effectively meeting the needs of their lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, and intersex (LGBTQQI) students, staff, faculty and administrators

Concurrent sessions and workshops may be facilitated by individuals or teams from one or more organizations. If you would like assistance in coordinating a joint presentation, please inquire by sending an email to

All presenters will be assigned a roundtable from 1-2 p.m. in addition to their individual session or workshop. These roundtables are designed to facilitate conversations, networking and opportunities to interact with presenters outside of a structured session.

You are invited to submit proposals for a concurrent session or workshop at the 2014 Michigan SOGI Education Conference. For an online submission form, click here. We are accepting proposals that align with the conference objectives and actively engage participants in critical dialogue and reflection.

Please have the following information available to complete the online submission process:
• Name, institutional affiliation and contact details for each presenter
• Level of participation
   - 60-minute concurrent session
   - 130-minute workshop
• Session/workshop details including:
   - session/workshop title
   - description for program (50 words or fewer)
   - session/workshop objectives
   - description of audience participation
• To meet state requirements for offering continuing education credits, participants must also submit
   - primary presenter CV/resume
   - primary presenter degree/major
