Our March School of Nursing Student Spotlight features one of our Bachelor of Science in Nursing students, Faith. On campus Faith is the President of the Black Student Nurses Association (BSNA), serves on the Student Nursing Association at Oakland University (SNAOU) Pinning Committee and works as a lab assistant in the School of Nursing.

When Faith was in elementary school she dreamt of becoming an OBGYN. During this time in her life she enjoyed playing with doctor’s kits and spending time with her grandma, who would share heartwarming baby stories with Faith. As her grandparents got older, she witnessed the nurses who took excellent care of them. It was this experience that made her realize she too would like to be more hands on with the patient care experience.

When asked who has made an impact on her time here at OU, Faith says “the professors in the School of Nursing show that they want you to succeed, encourage you to ask questions and you can meet with them during office hours for additional understanding when needed.” She went on to say, “the BSNA group meetings are a fantastic way to check in with your classmates, acknowledge accomplishments, and offer good support.”

Looking at her time spent at OU, Faith says, “I learned to never give up, to always know I have a support system, the campus has the tools to help you succeed to get through the tough classes, and continue on.”

Faith’s advice to new students, “Always have good time management, stay organized in your classes. Find a good study group that you can count on, it will help you not feel alone and they will be alongside you to get to the end. Find balance between studies and fun so you do not get overwhelmed. Join organizations and clubs, be part of the environment.”

Faith was the recipient of the Marlene A. Kucinski, RN, BSN Endowed Scholarship for the 2022-2023 academic year.

After graduation, Faith would like to work in one of her four top specialty areas – cardiac progressive floor, OR nursing, labor and delivery or the NICU. Looking at the future, she would like to go back to school to become a Nurse Practitioner, nurse midwife or try travel nursing.
