Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action Plan

Oakland University prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, creed, sex, age, marital status, national origin, mental or physical disability, political belief or affiliation, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, genetic information, and any other class of individuals protected from discrimination under state or federal law in any aspect of the access to, admission, or treatment of students in its programs and activities, or in employment and application for employment.

In order to accomplish the goals set forth in the institution's role and mission statement, it is essential that Oakland University's work force be appropriately representative of all racial and ethnic groups and of every gender identity. Accordingly, the University establishes an Affirmative Action Plan for the purpose of elimination and/or avoiding racial and sexual imbalances in traditionally segregated job categories. The goal of the Plan shall be to achieve within the University community a work force that is reasonably representative of minorities and women as measured by the race and sex mix of persons with the requisite skills within the reasonable employee recruiting area of the University. Once the goal is reached, a plan will no longer be necessary or appropriate, since any significant imbalances will have been eliminated. The University's commitment to equal opportunity shall, however, continue undiminished.

OU recognizes that each member of our community is unique, and that diversity is both essential to and a highly-valued attribute of the University as a site for learning and work. The Guidelines Prohibiting Discrimination and Guidelines for Handling Discrimination Complaints can be found on the OU Administrative Policies and Procedures Intranet page, under Human Resources.

OU reaffirms its commitment to maintaining an academic environment which fosters pluralism, mutual respect, appreciation of divergent views, and awareness of the importance of individual rights. The Guidelines Supporting the Equal Opportunity Policy and Faculty Hiring Procedures can be found on the OU Administrative Policies and Procedures Intranet page, under Human Resources.
