Moving companies connect monumental moments, from changing living places to navigating emotional spaces. Johnna Struck, SBA ’85, owner and president of Changing Places Moving company, strives to help people take their move in stride.

“A moving business requires a unique set of skills,” Struck says. “[Moving] is quite personal and stressful, one of the top stressors in life aside from death or divorce, but we strive to eliminate that stress.”

In fact, Struck’s foundation in Changing Places Moving was inspired by one of those top stressors in her own life. When her husband left her and their three young children in 2002, Struck took a risk, buying out his half of the moving company, a choice that would leave her more inspired than ever.

Operating in the background, she brought a strong business basis. Struck’s accounting studies from Oakland University positioned her as the company’s financial lead, even before her full ownership. With a complete map of the business’ inner workings, Struck desired to be more than just the owner. “I wanted to be able to do everything, even drive a truck,” she says. “I wanted to know what each job entails to set up good communication with my employees.”

Struck took on this leadership role, entering an industry primarily dominated by men. “Overall, it shows that anyone can do anything,” she says. “It’s just about determining what you want in life.”

For her small Waterford business to grow, Struck chose to tap into her own recent moves, including her divorce and change in position. She framed her business around the empathy required during moves. “I was able to figure out my next steps after my divorce — I was very fortunate in that aspect, and I just want to keep supporting other women in similar ways.”

While re-establishing her business, there were not always ample funds to spread across the community, but from the beginning, Struck used the resources at her fingertips. Even without initial traditional donations, Struck managed to give back by offering her moving services, trucks and time. Additionally, Struck is a co-founder and chairperson of Habitat for Humanity Oakland County Women Build Team, a nonprofit charity focusing on bringing other women out of difficult circumstances by preparing homes for them.

Changing Places Moving has doubled its truck inventory, and the team has almost tripled in size since Struck took over the business. With her personal approach to moving, the company continually experiences growth and has become a staple in the community.

“We’re not just about the business; we’re community-driven,” Struck says.
