Students invited to apply for Oakland University’s Keeper of the Dream Scholarship

Oakland University students who are making a difference on campus and in their communities are invited to apply for the 2027 Keeper of the Dream Scholarship Awards.

Scholarships ranging from $5,000 to $10,000 are available to students who have demonstrated strong citizenship, scholarship and leadership in breaking down cultural stereotypes and promoting interracial understanding. The awards will be presented at OU’s annual Keeper of the Dream Celebration, held each January in conjunction with Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The Keeper of the Dream Scholarship Awards pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy and his contributions to the advancement of civil rights. The awards recognize student leaders who embody Dr. King’s vision through advocacy, service and leadership on OU’s campus and beyond.

The 2027 awards will mark the 35th anniversary of the Keeper of the Dream program. With generous support from sponsors, more than 150 students have received Keeper of the Dream Scholarships since the program was established in 1993.

“Being a recipient of the Keeper of the Dream Scholarship is one of my proudest moments,” said OU student Jayson Miller, who received the award in 2026. “I would highly recommend students to take the opportunity to apply and continue the work that Dr. King paved the way for us to do!”

To be eligible for a Keeper of the Dream Scholarship, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Have a current cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
• Demonstrate involvement on campus.
• Have a record of responsible citizenship.
• Be enrolled at Oakland University for a minimum of 12 credits each term during the fall 2027 and winter 2028 semesters.

In addition to the application, students must submit a resume, personal essay and three letters of recommendation from Oakland University faculty or staff.

Applications are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, and are available online at oakland.edu/cmi/KOD.
