Scope and Applicability:

All Students Enrolled in the School of Medicine

Standard Practice Guideline:

Standard Practice Guideline: A student with an incomplete and/or failure on two M3 or M4 clerkships will not be allowed to progress to additional clinical experiences until the deficiencies are remediated. The student may continue on longitudinal courses at the discretion of the longitudinal course director.

Rationale:

Student with deficiencies across multiple clerkships, either grades of “Incomplete” or “Fail” indicates a significant deficit in clinical knowledge, clinical skills, or both.

Procedures:

A student with an unremediated grade of “Fail” or “Incomplete” on an M3 or M4 clerkship and who then receives a second clerkship grade of “Fail” or “Incomplete” will be withdrawn from all current and future clerkships. Students who are removed from clerkship will be enrolled in a Directed Independent Study. Clerkship directors will be required to complete a Request for Retesting/Remediation of Incomplete Grades form outlining the requirements for remediation and identifying a deadline for remediation, in conjunction with the clinical optimization specialist. The student will not be able to return to clerkships until the deficiencies in both clerkships are remediated. A grade of Withdraw (“W”) will be posted for the current clerkship. The student may continue on longitudinal courses at the discretion of the course director in consultation with the associate dean for undergraduate clinical education.

A student withdrawn from a clerkship will not receive partial credit for the clerkship. The student will be required to repeat the entire experience.
