Information for Student Away Electives
Away Electives:
Affiliation agreements are those contracts between the Oakland University and external entities which involve academic/clinical experiences for OUWB students at off-campus locations, including those outside the United States. Examples include:
- Clinical electives
- Research electives
OUWB Process:
After you've received an offer from either a VSLO or non-VSLO instiution, students must submit an away elective application in OpenCaseware.
Away elective applications must be submitted in Open Caseware at least 3 months prior to the start of the elective. If the host institution is not listed as an active agreement below, students should allow up to 6 months for processing and approval.
Information to be included in application:
- A copy of your offer letter/email
- The elective description/objectives
- Complete contact information for the host institution, whether VSLO or non-VSLO
If an OUWB student will fulfill any part of the degree program at other LCME or ACGME accredited institutions or teaching hospitals, an affiliation agreement is required prior to the student being approved for the experience.
The Director of Planning, Strategy, and Partnerships is responsible for procuring or confirming affiliation agreements with host institutions to ensure that agreements adhere closely to university policy and ensure the safety of our students during their training experience.
It's the student's responsibility to ensure that the timing for processing is appropriate as stated above and that all necessary steps are completed not only within VSLO or with the host institution, but also within OUWB. Failure to do so could impact your eligibility to participate in your elective at another institution.
Current/active affiliation agreements with host institutions:
Prior to submitting your application in Open Caseware, please make sure to check the list periodically as it is continuously updated. Note that the Affiliation Agreement/Partner name listed may not fully align with an elective location listed in VSLO.
