Welcome to the Fall 2025 edition of Advancing Oakland.
Every story in this issue is a reminder of why Oakland University matters and why it changes lives, builds futures and connects people across generations. OU is what I like to call a “glue university.” It holds people together, strengthens our community and region and creates bonds that endure.
This truth has been especially evident in recent weeks as we mourn the loss of our colleague and friend, Glenn McIntosh, Senior Vice President for Student Affairs. Glenn was the ultimate “glue guy,” – a servant leader who touched thousands of lives during his three decades at OU. His gift was not only in what he accomplished, but in how he made people feel – seen, supported and inspired to succeed. His passing leaves a profound void, but also a legacy that challenges each of us to be the glue for others.
And in so many ways, that is exactly what this issue of Advancing Oakland celebrates. One powerful example is the extraordinary generosity of Walt and Donna Young, whose transformational naming gift to the Honors College will impact generations of students to come. Their vision exemplifies what it means to be “glue people” – strengthening opportunity, connecting students across disciplines and ensuring Oakland continues to attract and nurture exceptional talent.
Each story you’ll read in these pages is evidence of glue people stepping up – donors who honor loved ones by giving back, alumni who create opportunities for today’s students and faculty who invest their time and passion into shaping the leaders of tomorrow. They are people who, like Glenn and the Youngs, connect others, strengthen our community and make sure OU continues to thrive.
Whether you’ve supported a student, preserved a piece of our history or created opportunities through your generosity, thank you. You are part of the glue that holds Oakland University together. It is a powerful legacy that grows with every gift, every graduate and every story of hope and transformation.
Please know how deeply your advocacy and investment are appreciated. You make OU stronger, and you help us carry forward the spirit of service and community that Glenn embodied so well.
With gratitude,
Michael J. Westfall
Vice President for University Advancement
