The Oakland Symphony Orchestra and Oakland Symphony Chorus will present Mozart’s Coronation Mass and the monumental Concerto for Orchestra of Bartók in their annual gala concert at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 2 at Detroit’s Orchestra Hall.
Conducted by Professor Michal A. Mitchell and Professor Gregory Cunningham, the concert will feature faculty soloists Nicole Joseph (soprano), Barbara Bland (alto), Drake Dantzler (tenor), and Constantine Novotny (bass).
“The members of the Oakland University Symphony Chorus are excited to return again to perform at Orchestra Hall,” said Mitchell, professor of music and director of choral activities at OU. “This is an unparalleled opportunity for our students to rehearse and perform in a world-class concert hall in the heart of Detroit. It’s a huge part of their educational experience at OU. The Mozart Coronation Mass, which they’ll be singing with the Oakland Symphony Orchestra, is full of Mozart’s soaring melodies and drama. They’ve fallen in love with the piece and can’t wait to share it with the audience.”
Orchestra Hall is in the Max M. Fisher Music Center, at 3711 Woodward Ave., in downtown Detroit. There is a parking structure adjacent to the hall. Directions and parking information is available on the Detroit Symphony Orchestra website.
“The opportunity for the entire music department to collaboratively perform in one of the country’s finest concert halls each year is a truly memorable experience for each member of the Oakland SMTD (School of Music, Theatre and Dance) community, and serves as an apex artistic experience for all of us,” said Cunningham, music director of the OSO and professor of orchestral and wind conducting at OU.
Tickets are $12 for students and $22 for the general public. They may be purchased online at www.etix.com.
