Dr. Kristin Landis-Piwowar, associate dean of the School of Health Sciences at Oakland University and professor of clinical and diagnostic sciences, has been named ASCLS –Michigan Member of the Year by the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science.

The award recognizes an exceptional clinical laboratory scientist in Michigan who is active in professional, civic, and non-professional activities.

“The recognition is an incredible honor,” Landis-Piwowar said. “My professional Medical Laboratory Science colleagues are dedicated clinical, health professionals who are busy working behind the scenes to save lives, and yet they make time to contribute to their professional organization, the American Society of Clinical Laboratory Science-Michigan (ASCLS-MI).

“The supportive environment of the ASCLS-MI organization has helped me to develop an incredible network of Medical Laboratory Science colleagues. That they value my contributions to our profession is humbling.”

Landis-Piwowar earned a bachelor’s degree in medical technology, a master’s degree in clinical laboratory science, and a Ph.D. in cancer biology. She has published more than 30 peer-reviewed journal articles on cancer therapeutics, prevention, and mechanisms of disease, has authored numerous book chapters, serves as the continuing education focus series editor for the Clinical Laboratory Science journal, and is the editor-in-chief of the fourth edition of McKenzie’s Clinical Laboratory Hematology, a leading textbook in hematology and hemostasis with global distribution.

In addition, Landis-Piwowar has held leadership positions including: co-chair of the ASCLS-MI Annual Meeting Planning Committee (2018), ASCLS-MI Scientific Assembly coordinator, ASCLS-MI Scientific Assembly molecular chair, and vice chair and chair of the ASCLS National Hematology Scientific Assembly.

She has also engaged the community by leading numerous, hands-on “Health Professions” camps and half-day learning experiences for middle and high school students.

“The public often doesn’t know of the many health professionals who work behind the scenes in patient diagnostics and care,” Landis-Piwowar said. “I’m hopeful to provide insight on the incredible health professionals who are less well-known and to open up opportunities for future health professionals.”

In addition to being named ASCLS–MI Member of the Year by the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science, Landis-Piwowar was also recently named one of Crain’s Detroit Business 2019 Notable Women in STEM.

“Given that Dr. Landis-Piwowar is also now completing her third year as an administrative leader in her associate dean role, these are truly extraordinary recognitions,” said Dr. Kevin Ball, dean of OU’s School of Health Sciences.
