Sixth grade students from Weston Academy toured the historic landmark of Meadow Brook Hall. Donated in 1957, the extravagant mansion and museum sits on Oakland University’s campus on an acre of over one thousand. Built by university founder Matilda Dodge Wilson, the mansion serves various purposes such as a winter wonderland for the holiday seasons, a lecture space for classrooms and a writing retreat over the summer.

At the beginning of the tour, the students learned about the history of Matilda Dodge and how she inherited money to build a home after her late husband’s passing. The students toured several rooms, such as the expansive living area, Matilda’s extensive library, the fresh sunroom and the children’s wings which included their bedrooms and additional guest rooms. The attention to detail of each room was noted by the tour guide, highlighting specific creative choices that give visitors more insight into the personalities of Matilda, her second husband, Alfred Wilson and their children. The tour was also an opportunity to enlighten students on the tumultuous and unprecedented times of the 1920s to early 1940s. Students were able to ask questions about the family that occupied the home and the historical events surrounding their time living at the estate. This tour was a great learning opportunity for each student and a time to appreciate architecture, art and regional history.

After the tour, the students enjoyed a lunch at Vandenberg Hall, further familiarizing themselves with the University and what Matilda Wilson made possible for future college students.
