For its 2023 Richard J. Burke Lecture in Philosophy, Religion and Society, Oakland University will welcome Dr. Linda Martín Alcoff, who will present her talk “Cultural Racism” from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, March 9, in Oakland Center Banquet Room A.
Dr. Martín Alcoff will discuss the idea of culture as a terrain for political struggle and provide a history of the ways in which cultural racism developed in the context of colonialism. Cultural racism refers to prejudices and discrimination based on cultural differences between racial and ethnic groups. Dr. Martín Alcoff argues that a focus on cultural racism can explain some of the current controversies in society and also help develop better solutions than the focus on attitudinal racism can produce.
Dr. Martín Alcolff is a professor of philosophy at the City University of New York. Her work includes “Race and Resistance: Understanding the Complexities of Sexual Violation,” “The Future of Whiteness,” and Visible Identities: Race, Gender and the Self,” winner of the Frantz Fanon Prize, which recognizes works of special interest to Caribbean thought. Her writings have also appeared in the New York Times, Aeon and the New York Indypendent, among other publications.
Designed to tackle some of today's compelling issues — from war to religion to sexual ethics — the Richard J. Burke Lecture in Philosophy, Religion and Society sparks serious, thought-provoking discussions between scholars, students and the community. The annual event honors the legacy of Richard J. Burke (1932-2012), professor emeritus of philosophy and the first faculty member hired at Oakland University.
