Oakland University has been named to Phi Theta Kappa’s 2021 Transfer Honor Roll, which recognizes excellence in the development and support of dynamic and innovative transfer pathways for community college transfer students.
Honorees are selected as being among the most transfer-friendly schools in the nation based on their Transfer Profile in PTK Connect, Phi Theta Kappa’s online tool that helps students find their best-fit colleges, career pathways and more.
The profile includes information about colleges’ admissions practices, cost of attendance, campus life, recruitment practices and peer reviews. It is meant to reflect what the transfer student experience is like at each college, as well as the strategies colleges are taking to support and enroll transfer students. Based on this information, colleges are given a Transfer Friendliness Rating, and the top 25 percent highest-rated colleges are named to the Transfer Honor Roll.
“The Transfer Honor Roll reflects the growing importance of recognizing and responding to the needs of transfer students,” Phi Theta Kappa President and CEO Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner said. “This award is given to four-year colleges and universities with proven outcomes for transfer success. They are the best at providing a supportive and smooth transition from community college — equating to increased rates of bachelor’s degree attainment for transfer students.”
Each year, Oakland University welcomes transfer students from community colleges and four-year schools, as well as military veterans, international students, and high school graduates who’ve earned college credits through Advanced Placement (AP) courses, International Baccalaureate (IB) programs or the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP).
“We’re extremely proud to be recognized among the nation’s most transfer-friendly schools by Phi Theta Kappa,” said Shane Lewis, OU’s director of admissions. “This honor reflects our ongoing commitment to making OU a first-choice destination for transfer students, not only locally, but across the state and beyond.”
OU transfer team members provide a variety of transfer-friendly services, including Virtual College Credit Information Sessions, Virtual Transfer Student Information Sessions, Virtual Transfer Tuesday programs and Virtual Transfer Welcome events. To streamline the admissions process for transfer students, OU also participates in statewide transfer agreements (such as MTA and MACRAO) and has nearly 40 articulation agreements with institutions primarily in Michigan, including the state’s community colleges.
In addition, a number of scholarships are available to OU transfer students, including the Presidential Transfer Award ($10,000), Phi Theta Kappa Award ($5,000), Talented Transfer Award ($2,000) and Frontline Workers Award ($2,500), in addition to the need-based OU Transfer Grant ($2,000).
