Dr. Elaine Carey, professor and dean of Oakland University’s College of Arts and Sciences has been elected to serve on the board of directors for Higher Education Resource Services (HERS).

Founded in 1972, HERS is a leadership development organization dedicated to building and sustaining a dynamic network of women and gender-diverse leaders in higher education.

Carey’s inclusive leadership style and commitment to the organization’s mission made her an ideal candidate to serve on the board.

“Not only is Elaine an alum of the HERS Leadership Institute, she has also organized several sessions at national conferences to help with our recruitment efforts,” said HERS President Dr. Gloria Thomas. “She’s thoughtful, well-connected and builds relationships with people of all backgrounds – that’s the type of leadership we look for when selecting board members.”

For more than 50 years, HERS has been at the forefront of efforts to increase equity in higher education. Its signature program, the HERS Leadership Institute, has prepared thousands of diverse leaders for higher education leadership roles across the U.S. In 2022, HERS celebrated its 50th anniversary with an event at Oakland University featuring Carey and other HERS Leadership Institute alums.

“I am thrilled to be part of the HERS board,” Carey said. “I attended my first HERS program, ‘Next Stages, Next Steps,’ during COVID, and since that time I knew I found a community of leaders who share the same values and ideas about the potential of higher education to change lives. The HERS experience has been an important cornerstone in my higher education leadership, empowering me to lead with a bold vision, to build inclusive communities, and to drive transformative and equitable change for students, faculty and colleagues.”

In addition to its Leadership Institute, HERS offers leadership development and training programs for various levels, from middle management to executive and senior-level roles to aspiring administrators. Learn more about HERS’ mission and programs at hersnetwork.org.
