Alumnae return to OUWB as faculty members

Two charter class members, Laura (Diffenderfer) Ortiz, M.D., and Lucy Boekelheide, M.D., have returned to OUWB as faculty members and physicians at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak.

Ortiz completed her residency at Indiana University in emergency medicine and came back to Michigan to work at Beaumont in the Department of Emergency Medicine, where she will also be an instructor.

Ortiz’s advice for students currently working toward their degrees at OUWB.

“Enjoy medical school; you’re with really great people, so try to spend a lot of time together outside of just studying,” she says. “Also, continue to work really hard when you’re on clinical rotations. Although you’re not technically the doctor yet, try to help out the residents as much as possible and figure out what qualities you’d like to model in yourself.”

Lucy Boekelheide, M.D., who completed her residency in family medicine at Beaumont, is looking forward to beginning the next chapter as an instructor in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health.

“I had excellent teachers and mentors when I trained at OUWB, and I’m excited to finally be able to pay it forward,” says Boekelheide.
