Public School Academies Celebrate College Decision Day

As the school year comes to a close, many high school seniors are gearing up for the big day and counting down the final hours as they prepare to graduate and decide which college they will attend in the fall.

Detroit Edison Public School Academy (DEPSA) and Universal Academy (UA) — both charter schools in Detroit that are authorized by Oakland University’s Office of Public School Academies — held ceremonies in celebration of their graduating senior classes.

DEPSA hosted a “College Decision Day” on Thursday, May 5 to recognize 100% of its graduating seniors receiving acceptance to a college or university, including Oakland University, the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. Several DEPSA seniors received scholarship awards amounting to $2 million. An additional $196,000 in scholarships was given to 14 students from Boys Hope Girls Hope, a community partner of DEPSA that supports young people in need.

Meanwhile, Universal Academy (UA) held its “Senior Decision Day” on Friday, May 20 to honor its senior class. The celebration was at an all-time high, with 49 seniors confirming their college and university choices, which included Wayne State University, Michigan State University, the University of Michigan – Dearborn, Wayne County Community College and Henry Ford Community College. Many UA seniors received scholarships of more than $100,000 — including one senior who was awarded funds of almost $1 million — bringing the total scholarship funding to $6,247,827.
