Office of Public School Academies Celebrates Student Authors

Oakland University’s Office of Public School Academies (PSA) has revived its annual student book-writing competition after a pandemic-prompted hiatus.

The yearly contest was created to encourage students’ creativity in writing and animation by telling a story using their own words and illustrations, and is open to all fifth graders at the PSA Office’s authorized charter schools. Sixth grade students were also allowed to participate this year, since last year’s competition was canceled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Winners were chosen for both the fifth and sixth grade levels.

Universal Academy (UA) held an assembly celebrating its student authors and invited family, staff and PSA team members to come for support. Each participant was awarded a certificate from UA and the PSA Office, while UA also gave students a small gift of school supplies. The winners of the contest had their submission printed into hardcover books as a keepsake, with an additional copy provided to their school for display.

Meanwhile, at Caniff Liberty Academy and Detroit Edison Public School Academy, students were presented with the awards by PSA staff members in their classroom and at their school board meeting. Classmates, parents, administration and board members were present to celebrate their students’ achievements.
