When looking back on the storied history of Rochester and Oakland University, few names resonate as deeply as Frank Rewold & Sons. The construction firm, tracing its origins to the early 20th century, has been instrumental in the physical shaping of the city and Oakland University. Recently, in a gesture that merges the past with the present, Frank Rewold & Sons donated a generous gift to the university by providing the funds to acquire a vintage automobile – a pristine 1928 Dodge Victory.

Legacy of Frank Rewold & Sons

Founded in 1918 by Frank M. Rewold, the firm formed intimate connections with auto magnate John Dodge and his wife Matilda Dodge Wilson, at their Meadow Brook Farm. Frank’s expertise in building and maintaining many of the structures on the Dodge property would form the foundation for the company's future successes.

The company grew, driven by hard work and dedication, with subsequent generations of the Rewold family carrying the torch. From Roy Rewold, who joined his father in the nascent days of the business, to the present-day CEO, the second Frank Rewold, the company’s ties to Rochester and Oakland University have remained unyielding. Having worked on most of the university’s buildings, the legacy of Frank Rewold & Sons is intrinsically woven into the very fabric of Oakland University.

The Journey of the 1928 Dodge Victory

The Dodge Victory’s own journey is a fascinating tale of resilience and legacy. Originally acquired by a family near Richmond, Indiana in a trade involving a team of horses, the car's early adventures included being rescued from a snowy ditch by the power of horses. This automobile, having been meticulously cared for over the decades, showcases its rich history – from its beautifully preserved interior to the shining lacquer paint on its body.

But the 1928 Dodge Victory isn't just another vintage car; it signifies a turning point in automobile manufacturing. Its revolutionary all-steel design made full use of sheet steel’s properties, positioning it as one of the most vital cars in automotive history.

A New Chapter at Oakland University

The 1928 Dodge Victory, with its unique background, will now serve an educational and promotional purpose at Oakland University. This iconic vehicle will bridge the past and present, highlighting Rochester's rich history and those who have shaped it. From commencement ceremonies to parades and alumni events, the car will be a focal point, reminding students and the community of the intertwined stories of the Dodge family, Frank Rewold & Sons and Oakland University.

Thanks to the advocacy, passion and persistence of Honors College Dean Graeme Harper, this vintage car will offer unparalleled learning opportunities and foster a partnership between the School of Engineering and Computer Science and The Honors College. The Dodge Victory will inspire group senior design restoration projects, connecting students with historic design and manufacturing processes.

Mike Westfall, Oakland University vice president of university advancement, captures the essence of this remarkable gift, "The donation from Frank Rewold & Sons is more than just a kind gesture; it symbolizes the enduring bond between Oakland University, the Dodge family, and Frank Rewold & Sons. This vehicle will provide generations of students with a tangible link to our rich heritage. I appreciate the generosity of Frank Rewold and his mother Bev Rewold, in making this idea a reality."

In essence, the 1928 Dodge Victory’s journey at Oakland University is just beginning. With its rich legacy and the promise of fostering collaboration and learning, this gift from Rewold & Sons ensures that the stories of years passed continue to inspire generations to come.
