Google security update to require revision of shared file links

Important Google Workspace account change coming

On July 23, 2021, Google will communicate a security update that will impact all URL links that Google Workspace end users have generated as a result of sharing files created in or uploaded to Google Drive, Shared Drive, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Forms, Google Slides and more.

In Google's coming email communication, end users will be informed of all impacted file links that they own or manage and provided instruction on how to make necessary updates. This process will apply only to file links created on or before July 23, 2021. Any file links created thereafter will have the new security update applied to them automatically.

Google Workspace users are advised that if existing file links that they own or manage are not updated, the Google security update implemented on September 13, 2021, will cause those links to break. In order to reestablish shared access to affected files, users will be required to update the file links at that time.

Notice to oakland.edu web content managers

University faculty and staff who use Percussion to manage web content within the oakland.edu domain are advised that in addition to updating Google Workspace file links impacted by the upcoming security update, it will also be necessary to replace any such file links that have been posted on the OU website with the revised file links generated through the update process that Google provides.

Action is required in these instances sooner than it is for Google Workspace file links in general, as unrevised file links posted within the oakland.edu domain will break on August 25, 2021.
