Oakland University is now actively participating in the Bandana Project – a mental health awareness and suicide prevention initiative that uses green bandanas to support campus community members in need of help.
Specifically, participants are distributing resource cards that promote seven specific mental health information and resources on the OU campus. Both bandanas and resource cards are provided to individuals who elect to become advocates with the initiative.
Green bandanas can be worn or displayed as symbols of support for mental health programs that promote everyday conversations about available resources and self-care. OU's advocates target fellow students and colleagues in organization meetings, housing programs, faculty and staff meetings, student staff trainings and other wellness programming events and opportunities.
At this year's New Student Convocation ceremony, all participants received a green bandana and a resource card in their cinch sacks.
OU faculty, staff and students are being asked to become familiar with the numerous resources OU has to help individuals manage their health and well-being, and to display their green bandana as a sign that they know what is available and can help those who might need support.
Campus community members interested in getting involved as advocates can get additional information by visiting the project website or contacting Cortney Heileman at [email protected].
