The two largest sources of revenue for the university are state appropriations and tuition, and their proportions relative to each other have changed dramatically since 1972. State appropriation now makes up only 16% of the total, as depicted in Chart 1. Oakland ranks lowest among Michigan public universities in appropriations when calculated on a per-student basis, as depicted in Chart 2.
