Dennis Muchmore, an accomplished public policy professional with more than 40 years of experience in the federal and state legislative and regulatory process, is the inspiration behind OU's new policy series which highlights critical issues facing the region, state and nation.

The inaugural event in The Dennis Muchmore Public Policy Series, “Breaking the Barrier: The Importance of Civility and Improving Political Discourse,” will be held from 6-7 p.m. on Monday, September 18, in the Oakland Center Banquet Rooms.

Hosted by Oakland University’s Center for Civic Engagement, the event will welcome former Michigan Governors James Blanchard and Rick Snyder for a discussion about the importance of civility in political discourse. Chuck Stokes, editorial/public affairs director for WXYZ-TV/Channel 7, will moderate the event, which is free and open to the public.

To register for the event, fill out the Google Form.

“Having former Governors Blanchard and Snyder come to our campus to discuss the need for bolstering civility in public life is a great opportunity for us,” said Dave Dulio, distinguished professor of political science and director of the Center for Civic Engagement. “Having two former governors from different sides of the aisle gives us a chance to highlight the fact that people can disagree without being disagreeable.”

The Dennis Muchmore Policy Series was established in honor of Dennis Muchmore, an accomplished public policy professional with more than 40 years of experience in the federal and state legislative and regulatory process.

Muchmore is the co-leader of the Government Relations and Regulatory Practice of Honigman, LLP. He previously served as chief of staff for the Executive Office of Gov. Rick Snyder, principal of Muchmore Harrington Smalley & Associates, and senior vice president of the Michigan Chamber of Commerce.

The Dennis Muchmore Public Policy Series was established through a generous gift from Oakland University Trustees Board Chair Robert Schostak and his wife, Nancy. The annual event will feature a speaker or panel discussion focused on a critical issue facing the region, state or nation.
