ISE student takes top prize
Industrial and Systems Engineering undergraduate student, Matt Toter, won first place and a $500 prize in the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE) Great Lakes Regional Conference's Student Technical Paper Competition. The conference took place from February 15 - 17 at the University of Michigan's Ann Arbor campus.
The purpose of the competition, according to the conference's website, "is to encourage undergraduate students to write and present outstanding technical papers." Students were judged on their paper and their presentation of it. Students from the University of Michigan, Purdue University, Youngstown State University and Western Michigan University also competed.
Toter's paper was from his summer internship at the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois. He stated, "I helped engineers investigate the cause of inconsistencies noticed during electric and hybrid vehicle testing. I designed several experiments to identify what caused errors in the data acquisition unit used to determine the electric consumption of the vehicles. I produced a new procedure to ensure that accurate results would be found consistently regardless of where the test is being performed."
Robert Van Til, Chair of the Industrial and Systems Engineering Dept. said "Matt is a real asset to our department. He is a well-rounded individual, besides being an excellent student, he is a goalie on Oakland's club hockey team."
After winning the competition, Toter was invited to represent the region this May at the IIE Annual Conference's National Student Technical Paper Competition in Puerto Rico.
